We've got a new look!

We’re looking pretty good for someone in their 30s. But even the most attractive among us can use a little makeover once in a while. Over the next couple of months, we’ll be introducing a fresh Stop logo (see above) as well as adding some new, badly needed signage and wayfinding at our various facilities. Read more...

People at The Stop: David Cobb

Main Content Inline Small

There are thousands of people who use, benefit from and work with The Stop every year—and The Stop, in turn, is greatly enriched by their involvement with us. Today, we introduce David Cobb, retired journalist and volunteer.

David Cobb is a self-avowed car nut. It’s no surprise then, that his volunteer work at The Stop involves him transporting fresh produce from our greenhouse and Farmers’ Market to our 1884 Davenport location. “Have car, will travel,” he says, smiling. Every Tuesday, you can see David loading up his navy blue Subaru with boxes of okra or bags of greens; the food will be sold at our Good Food Market, given out at the food bank or become part of a meal at the Drop-in.

A wry, irascible Englishman, David’s been volunteering at The Stop for the past nine months. For decades previously—since he arrived in Canada in 1958, in fact—he was a journalist. His first job was at a newspaper in Timmins, Ontario, but he eventually made his way to Southern Ontario, working as a general reporter and entertainment columnist for everyone from the Toronto Star to Maclean’s . "He's a lovely man," our Volunteer Coordinator, Susan MacDonald, says. "He brings a little ray of sunshine every time he comes in." Speaking of The Stop, David returns the compliment: "It's extremely valuable for the community," he says. And volunteering offers him its own kind of reward: "It's doing something worthwhile. Instead of just sitting on my prat in front of a computer."
