Faith that lasts

Welcome to the Kitchen Table Project community and the first of the monthly emails you’ll receive from us. Full of encouragement, ideas, case studies and resource reviews, we hope that you will be inspired as you equip parents and carers in their most important ministry of discipling their children.

So the question this month is:

How can we help parents realise that they are best placed to disciple their children, not just on a Sunday, but in the everyday rhythm of life?

It’s easy for parents to think that children and youth workers are better equipped to disciple their children. We live in an expert culture – the skilled musician teaches piano, and the football coach nurtures football skills.

But what was God’s design?

In Deuteronomy 6:4-9 during Moses' final days he instructs the Israelites to continue to love the Lord their God and to keep his commandments in their hearts. But he doesn't stop there. He wants the next generation to experience the love of God for themselves.

Moses instructs parents to share their experience and knowledge of God with their children - when they sit at home, when they walk along the road, when they lie down and when they get up.

He suggests they make their relationship with God visible to their children in normal everyday life, so that the next generation have the opportunity to encounter God for themselves.

The church definitely has a part to play in our children developing their own relationships with God, but parents have the divine opportunity to share Jesus at home, and we can support them!

With kind regards

This month ...

Empower parents by recognising the valuable role they play.

Could you ask parents to pray for their children before they go out to Sunday School, rather than praying for the children as a church leader or children’s worker?

You could involve the whole church by asking them to pray for the families around them at the same time.

Inspire session

Run Inspire sessions for small groups of parents.
This provides parents with the opportunity to encourage one another and share ideas of ways they can inspire their children’s faith at home.
