U of L Hosts International Research Meeting of Herschel SPIRE Partners, May 3, 4

Inline Image

The U of L will host the first and only SPIRE consortium meeting to be held in Canada on May 3 and 4 in Banff.

More than 50 researchers from around the world will gather to update their colleagues on the Herschel mission, share data and discuss the outcomes of their research to date.

Dr. Steve MacLean, President of the Canadian Space Agency and former astronaut, will give the opening address.

As the lead Canadian researcher for the Canadian Space Agency’s contribution to the Herschel Space Observatory, U of L scholar Dr. David Naylor (Physics and Astronomy) has played a key role in the development of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE).

SPIRE is one of three instruments on the Herschel spacecraft that is orbiting 1.5 million km from the earth. Functioning at a chilly -270C, SPIRE observes the universe at very long wavelengths, those well beyond the limit of human vision.

Radiation emitted at these wavelengths is able to travel relatively unimpeded through even the densest regions of space, which allows astronomers to view back in time to the formation of the first galaxies. Get all the details about SPIRE, the research team and the Banff meeting, here.

Recent discoveries from Herschel are showing the far reaches of space in  greater detail than ever before.  Learn more  about a "comet demolition derbyand other projects, here.

Dancing Stormtroopers Leap to 85,000 YouTube Views

Inline Image

A recent 3D motion capture animation by U of L New Media student Matt Lunde has jumped from a modest 1500 YouTube views to almost 85,000  in just one week.

Hundreds of Facebook re-posts and forwards  -- including a prominent spot on a UK-based tabloid newspaper site,  a Denver, CO radio station website and many more -- have driven the traffic to YouTube and to Lunde's site.

This is not a bad thing to have happen to a student soon to be working for the Canadian Space Agency creating 3D models of objects more suited to this galaxy, rather than the one far, far away.

The video clip features  a group of Darth Vader's Imperial Stormtroopers dancing to the group LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem". See for yourself: Lunde's project  can be viewed here

U of L Researcher Cynthia Chambers and Inuit Partners Visually Repatriate Rare Artifacts from Far North

Inline Image

The British Museum’s collection of Inuinnait objects is part of a “visual repatriation” project that brought northern elders, crafts people and researchers to London, England last  week.

The project is part of the Ulukhaktok literacies research, a long‐term collaboration among the NWT Literacy Council, the community of Ulukhaktok, and Dr. Cynthia Chambers, a Faculty of Education researcher from the University of Lethbridge.

The research sought to understand what “literacy” meant traditionally to the Kangiryuarmiut and what it means today.

The elders, researchers and crafts people will examine British Museum tools, clothing and other objects dating back to the first encounters between Europeans and ancestors of the Inuinnait.

The museum objects and the trip to London, England will be captured in photos and a video documentary. Learn more here.

Blake finds balance in burgeoning musical career

Ask Pronghorns men’s basketball guard Terrence Blake who he looks to emulate and Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Chris Paul or Rajon Rondo won’t be on the list.

No, Blake is more likely to drop names such as Lil Wayne, Drake and Akon, because as much as basketball is his game, music is his passion.

“Music started for me when I was in junior high,” says Blake, who just recently hit the urban rap charts with his first single, Ima Get Paid.

“I’ve always written, done poetry, and I started turning it into music in high school. From there it’s just been a passion I’ve had and continued on with – it’ll probably never stop.” Learn more about Terrence and his music career, here.
