New Zealand School of Music - Dawn Chorus nzsm_header
September 2014
Dawn Chorus

You'll find something for everyone among the NZSM events scheduled through the remainder of this month and into October. In particular there are three highly anticipated events: the biannual 'A Night At The Opera' performances, the annual NZSM Composers Competition and the final orchestral concert for the year including the winner of the 2014 Concerto Competition.

NB: Through circumstances beyond our control, the Music Forum originally scheduled for tomorrow, 12 September, featuring Professor Margaret Barrett, has been cancelled. This Forum will now feature Dr Robert Legg, NZSM, with a presentation entitled: Bach, Beethoven, Bourdieu: cultural capital and the scholastic canon in England's 'Advanced Level' examinations.

A Night at the Opera ... Operetta ... Musical Theatre

Opera image

The NZSM Classical Performance Voice department presents its bi-annual 'Opera Scenes' performances. Students will perform staged excerpts with full costume and lighting, from works ranging from Britten's Peter Grimes and Puccini's La Bohème to Sondheim's A Little Night Music – directed by Frances Moore and accompanied by Mark Dorrell.

Seating is limited in the ACR to just 135 people per performance – Tickets are available online through Eventfinder. There will be two performances of A Night At The Opera: Friday 19 September and Saturday 20 September. With the latter being New Zealand’s General Election day, the politically involved may prefer coming on Friday while the politically agnostic might come on Saturday.

The final NZSM Orchestra concert for the year will feature performances from two outstanding soloists.

As winner of the 2014 NZSM Concerto Competition, DMA student Xin (James) Jin will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto – one of the best known works in the repertoire.

Amelia Berry completed her BMus (Hons) at NZSM in 2010 and has gone on to achieve outstanding results in further study at the Manhattan School of Music. She is back in New Zealand performing the role of Zerlina in NZ Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni but will take time out to sing the solo role in Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915.

The orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Young, will also include Brahm's Tragic Overture and Bartók's Dance Suite in the programme.

HELP US EDUCATE OUR YOUNG MUSICIANS

For some of New Zealand's most talented musicians, the only thing that stands in the way of their dreams is the lack of funds to make them real.
