As Dr. Hull mentioned in her article on the "winter itch," Vanicream products are a great option to soothe dry and irritated skin. The mild and gentle Vanicream Cleansing Bar is fragrance-free and ideal for bath or shower time. If you are sensitive to irritants in ordinary soap, this bar is for you! It is enriched with Vanicream Skin Cream so it moisturizes while gently cleaning the skin. The result? You feel clean, fresh, and soft. A soap with this much lathery goodness is a must during these cold and windy days. After your shower, treat your skin to Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream. It's not greasy and it spreads smoothly. Get rid of cracked heels, over-washed hands, and rough knees. This hydrating cream restores and maintains your skin's moisture levels. Plus, it's not going to clog your pores and cause breakouts so it's perfect for use all over the body. You can pick up Vanicream at our store, The Skin Solution, or order it online. SURVIVING THE 'WINTER ITCH' By: Cheryl Hull, MD Happy New Year to all of our wonderful patients! I hope this newsletter finds you well. Many people have "winter itch" this time of the year. I have a few skin care recommendations for you to help combat the dryness and itching. During your bath or shower, make sure you are using a very mild soap and avoid bubble bath products in general. I recommend either Vanicream Cleansing Bar, Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar, or CeraVe Hydrating Cleansing Bar. Take lukewarm showers and when you step out, don't completely dry off. Leave some of the water on your skin and trap it on there by immediately applying a fragrance-free moisturizer. My favorite product for this is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (not the lotion, as it is not moisturizing enough). Other great alternatives would be Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream, Aquaphor, Vaseline, Lubriderm, and Cetaphil. Always moisturize daily. When washing clothes, make sure your laundry products are fragrance-free. All Free Clear and Tide Free and Gentle are the most hypoallergenic products. Their gentle formulas are mild and free of dyes and perfumes. Finally, the air gets very dry this time of the year and a cool mist humidifier running in your bedroom at night can help add back some of the moisture. If you are doing all of the recommendations above and are still having breakouts, contact our office. We can work you in for evaluation, as you may need some prescription products to help calm your skin. Our number is 479-254-9662, Option 1. You can also visit our store, The Skin Solution, to pick up Vanicream products. I hope 2018 is off to a great start for you! Take care and let us know how we can help you with any of your skin care needs! BACK-TO-SCHOOL BUMPS By: Christina Gragg, Surgical Technologist With all the little ones returning to school from the holidays, you may experience and question new skin bumps that appear on your child. Molluscum Contagiosum (aka "daycare bumps") are small, pink or flesh-colored bumps that appear on the skin and are harmless to the overall health of your child. They are typically found in children under 10 years of age and in those who have eczema, a type of sensitive skin. There are several treatment options for molluscum including cryotherapy, chemical destruction, removal of molluscum body, and/or simply time. Some treatments can be done from home, but there is no cure. Unfortunately, it is caused by a virus, which is contagious and ultimately has to run its course. As this is such a common virus, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend withholding your child from school or social contact. Molluscum can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to resolve. Precautions to minimize spread of the virus can be helpful: 1. Do not attempt to scrub or rub the bumps as this will likely cause symptoms to worsen. 2. Avoiding touching bumps. Adequate hand washing is recommended. 3. It is also beneficial to treat any underlying eczema that may be irritating the skin and causing the molluscum to spread on your child. Commonly, mild eczema can be treated as simply as following a specific list of sensitive skin precautions and possibly a mild topical steroid, both provided by your dermatologist. Remember, anything that grows or changes and does not completely resolve within a few weeks should be evaluated by a medical professional. If you suspect your child may have molluscum and/or eczema, contact one of the providers at Hull Dermatology for a skin assessment and to discuss which treatment option is best for your child. As a child in Northwest Arkansas, Dr. Cheryl Hull’s family owned the land where our clinic sits today. She lived in Rogers through junior high school, attending both St. Vincent de Paul and Shiloh Christian School. Later she attended Gentry High School, where she was a key player on a state basketball championship team. Dr. Hull is also a pianist who trained under Mrs. Betty Sutton of Rogers. After high school, Dr. Hull studied at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and received a Bachelor's degree in Biology (Magna Cum Laude) and a Master's in Microbiology (with honors). She continued her studies in Little Rock where she attended medical school, graduating with honors, then completed anr internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She received numerous awards, scholarships, and honors during this time and published several scientific papers in major medical journals. As many of our patients know, her father, Dr. Robert R. Hull, is a family medicine physician who has been in private practice in Rogers for over 35 years. Her husband is a physician at the Veteran's Hospital in Fayetteville and they have four young children.
