For those families that do not know me, my name is Kim Geis, and I am the Reading Interventionist at FCMA. Many things are different at the start of this school year, but many also remain the same. One thing that remains the same is our commitment to the education of our students. In 2016, the State of Michigan enacted the Read by Grade Three Law. If you are not familiar with the law, I have included some links below for more information. The Read by Grade Three law is still in effect for the 2020/2021 school year. At the beginning of each school year, students take the NWEA MAP (Northwest Evaluation Association Measure of Academic Progress) assessment. The MAP assessment evaluates student knowledge in the areas of reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. As accorded by the Read by Grade Three law, students in grades K-3, that show a possible reading deficiency are considered for an Individual Reading Improvement Plan. A team that may include the classroom teacher, reading interventionist, principal, and parent/guardian designs a Reading Improvement Plan. If your child is identified with a possible reading deficiency, you will receive a letter home and you will be invited to give input to your child Individual Reading Intervention Plan. If your child is currently on an IRIP, it will continue this school year. If you are new to the school and your child was on an IRIP at their previous school, please email me, kimberlygeis@choiceschools, or your child’s classroom teacher. This will make the process of updating child’s IRIP much quicker. Below are some links to visit if you are looking for information. Again, welcome back!
