CPC Urges Essential Community Funding at 8th Annual City Advocacy Day

On April 22nd, Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) convened over 600 staff, community members, and elected officials at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Sunset Park for our 8th Annual City Advocacy Day. We gathered in solidarity to call on New York City to make critical investments that address the needs of Asian American, immigrant, and low-income communities.

Among CPC's budget and legislative priorities this year include:

  • Investing $7.5 million in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities to address the historical underfunding of AAPI communities across the city and to ensure AAPI children, youth, seniors, and families can reach their fullest potential.

  • Promoting universal access to free, quality, and reliable childcare to support the positive development of children, help parents continue working, and keep families living in New York.

  • Increasing worker protections and employment security for all New Yorkers through the Secure Jobs Act, which would end unjust and arbitrary firings for non-unionized workers.

We were joined by Council Member Alexa Avilés, Council Member Justin Brannan, Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, Council Member Susan Zhuang, Deputy Borough President of Queens Ebony Young, and the Office of the Public Advocate, all of whom spoke about the importance of passing an equitable budget this session. Staff and community members also shared stories of CPC's impact across generations.

Throughout the festive event, volunteers helped distribute information and resources, registered new voters, and assisted with a postcard writing campaign.

On Thursday, April 24th, CPC staff and community members met virtually with several Council Members and continued to share our policy and advocacy priorities. Thank you to the following legislators and their teams for meeting with us:

Majority Leader Amanda Farías and Council Members Alexa Avilés, Gale Brewer, Jennifer Gutiérrez, Shahana Hanif, Shekar Krishnan, Julie Menin, Mercedes Narcisse, Lincoln Restler, Kevin Riley, Carlina Rivera, and Susan Zhuang.

CPC is grateful to everyone who participated. Your support was a crucial step in ensuring that AAPI, immigrant, and low-income communities are seen, heard, and represented in New York!
