Author Susin Nielsen Visits Grade 9 Students
After spending a day with Middle School students last week, author Susin Nielsen joined the Grade 9 students and shared her experiences as a writer of television scripts and many popular Young Adult novels. Many of our students are familiar with Susin’s writing and made the most of the opportunity to ask one of their favourite authors questions.
Susin led workshops with English 9 students, inspiring them to create their own characters by exploring the qualities that make a person unique, and, by extension, unearthing conflicts that could lead to the development of their own original short stories. “My highlight from today,” Ting Ting W. remarks, “was certainly the excitement that I had when building a protagonist… I found it really interesting how a few simple questions could lead to creating a whole story.” For others, like Emily S., the highlight was “hearing about her childhood and what inspired her to become a writer. She taught us that even if you might be a really bad writer when you were younger, things can change, and as long as you pursue this passion with determination, your dreams can come true.”
Creating Cards for Charity
Middle School students created cards with messages of hope for Ignite the Warmth, an organization that organizes drives to collect blankets and warm clothes for residents of the Downtown Eastside. Every card created will accompany a donated blanket or winter necessities.
Grade 2 Students Clean Drains
Grade 2 students are currently learning about the water cycle and the ocean, and how they can protect these. As a class, they have adopted drains to take care of and have even given them names such as Drainy Fishy, Star of the World, Ariana, and Stormy.
We for She Conference
Five Senior School students attended the We for She Conference last Friday. This year’s forum focused on how we can further equality across Canada and beyond as leaders, champions, employers, and community members. Students were asked to share and reflect on their experiences, be proud of their stories, and to recognize the importance of being themselves. By accepting and listening to others' stories, students can take steps toward creating an equal future for everyone.
'Tis the Season
It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season on campus, thanks to Gurmeet Sengara, past parent, and Katherine Grant, Parents’ Auxiliary board member, for their efforts in decorating the Old Residence foyer and Heritage Dining Room, and the tree in Manrell Hall.
