Competing in Powell River, our athletes won the tournament for the second year in a row, defeating the Carihi Tyees from Campbell River in a five-set thriller. Down by four points in the fifth set, our Falcons came back and sealed their victory with a 15-12 win. Captain Jadyn V-S. was named the tournament’s MVP. Go Falcons!

Pepper the Robot
Pepper the Robot paid a visit to Crofton House this week with her creator Dr. Angelica Lim, a roboticist at Simon Fraser University. Pepper is the world’s first social humanoid robot able to recognize faces and basic human emotions. She was optimized for human interaction and is able to engage with people through conversation and her touchscreen.

Ivy 8 Day Focuses on Aboriginal Education
Grade 8 students had the opportunity to hear from Aboriginal speaker Dallas Yellowfly in his production “Qwalena”. Blending his live narrative with modern multimedia, Dallas shared a story about the inter-generational impact of Indian residential schools, speaking very personally about how this impacted his father, mother, and himself.

Awareness Fair
Grade 7 students launched their first Awareness Fair today, recognizing nonprofit organizations they support. The students expanded on a challenge from their Outdoor Education trip in October in which they were tasked to think about an issue they care about and an action they could take. Accompanying their research presented at the Awareness Fair were girl-made goods, such as bath bombs and sugar scrubs, that other students could purchase. Money raised from the sale of these goods will be donated to the nonprofit organizations.

K-Pop Discussion Takes Over AP Human Geography
Following rounds of lively discussions about sports, sushi and Hip-Hop music, Monday’s AP Human Geography class was no different as students were jazzed up to talk about Korean Pop (K-Pop) music and the distribution and impacts of popular culture. Prepared and ready for discussions as part of the Harkness method, students delved into thinking about how globalization affects culture and identity. Though the careful selection of texts, and proper facilitation of discussion, the Harkness method allows for the connections between course material and students' lives to unveil themselves in memorable and impactful ways.

CHS Parents' Auxiliary

A Message from the CHS Parents’ Auxiliary:
We would like to take a moment as we approach the winter break to reflect on the past few months and acknowledge the efforts of our wonderful school community. The PA’s mission is to create an active, inclusive, and engaged community that enriches school life for our girls and families. It has been a busy fall season filled with events that exemplify the spirit of citizenship that defines CHS.

Last week, Senior School girls and their families helped prepare and deliver nutritious food to Vancouver residents living with food insecurity as part of the PA’s Service Friday. This event allows parents and daughters to spend meaningful time together while contributing to the larger community. Watch for registration for the next Service Friday to take place in February.

Congratulations and a sincere thank you to our PA Board members, the parent volunteers who organize our wonderful events, and to each and every one of you who generously donated your time. All CHS families are automatically members of the Parents’ Auxiliary and annual PA fees and parent volunteers help contribute to the culture and sense of community that make CHS so special.

We look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Happy Holidays!

Suzanne Chong
Chair, CHS Parents’ Auxiliary
