Event: Community Workshop - Pelican and Blacksmiths Local Adaptation Plan

6pm - 8.30pm, Thursday 11 August, Swansea Belmont Surf Club

We’ve heard your ideas for how to respond to ongoing sea level rise, higher future flood levels and beach erosion in Pelican and Blacksmiths. At this event, we’ll take a more detailed look at these ideas, consider where and how they could be implemented and check if there are other options that have not been suggested to date.

Event: Community Update and Discussion - Review of land use planning and development controls - Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan

6pm - 9pm, Thursday 18 August 2016, Marks Point Public School Hall, Findon Street, Marks Point

Council staff are reviewing all of the actions in the Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan, adopted earlier in 2016, related to land use planning and development controls. The first round of the review will look at our controls about building heights, setbacks, filling of land prone to sea level rise, and adaptable housing. Come along to our meeting to share your thoughts on these issues.

We will continue to look at other planning related items over the next 2-4 years, as set out in Appendix 1 of the Local Adaptation Plan.

News: First test for the tidal flaps at Marks Point

The trial tidal flaps installed at Marks Parade and Village Bay Close have had an early workout.  The valves reportedly prevented saltwater surcharging into Village Bay Close during a high tide on Thursday July 7. However, on the following day relatively light showers caused stormwater to back up at both Village Bay Close and the northern end of Marks Parade. The same thing happened after showers on Wednesday July 20.

Thanks to all those residents who sent photos, e-mails and rainfall records. A report will be sent to residents shortly. Residents are invited to on-site meetings to discuss the future of the trial at Village Bay Close (opposite number 18) 5pm Wednesday 3 August and at the corner of Marks Parade  and Cygnet Street at 5pm on Thursday 4 August.

For more information contact Council on 4921 0333.

News: Foreshore stabilisation work begins at Belmont Pines Holiday Park

You may have noticed the temporary placement of rocks near the Belmont South boat ramp. These materials are to be used for foreshore stabilisation work at the Belmont Pines Holiday Park.

Parts of the foreshore in the Park are experiencing considerable erosion and, combined with the lack of native vegetation and high public use the foreshore, can be expected to continue to erode.

The Management Plan for the Park, exhibited and adopted in 2015, recommended Council undertake corrective foreshore stabilisation work to facilitate the commercial operation of the Park. Works are expected to be completed sometime in September.

News: Latest on boat ramp closures and upgrades

When will the Pelican Boat Ramp be replaced or relocated?

Council is aware of the difficulties associated with the temporary closure of the Pelican boat ramp which was extensively damaged during the April 2015 storms. Further erosion has occurred since this time (which has also resulted in the collapse of the Pelican Marina complex), triggering the need to undertake a broader assessment of foreshore stability and remedial options for the Pelican area.  Council is currently working with the Crown Lands Division of the NSW Department of Primary Industries (who are the lead agency for this project) to have this assessment and option analysis undertaken.

Whist Council had previously allocated funds to repair the boat-ramp facility, the commencement of these works has been deferred until the foreshore stability assessment is complete.

Is a temporary boat ramp possible?

Due to the significant erosion of the foreshore, depth of the channel, and the fast flowing channel currents experienced at the site, it is not considered feasible to deploy a temporary boat ramp structure.

Where are other boat ramps?

There are several other boat ramps that Lake users could use while the Lakeview Parade, Pelican boat ramp is closed, including those located at:

  • Thomas Humphreys Reserve, Swansea (recently upgraded), access via Dobinson Drive;
  • Blacksmiths Channel Reserve, Blacksmiths, access via Ungala Road; and
  • Naru Point, Marks Point.

From Monday 18 July, the boat ramp and car park located at the corner of The Esplanade and Lake Road at Swansea will be closed while upgrades take place. Visit lakemac.com.au for or call 4921 0333 for more information.
