CERF+ Disaster Relief Notices

If you have gotten more communications from CERF+ than just the e-News recently, it is because of the severe weather that has struck many parts of the country these last few weeks. CERF+ sends targeted emails to artists and organizations in disaster-affected areas about our assistance and other recovery resources for artists. You can help us in this important outreach by:

  1. Keeping us updated when your email or address changes.
  2. Passing the word on to other artists and organizations that they can join our email list.
  3. Forwarding any "disaster relief assistance" email you receive from CERF+ to artists and organizations in your area and posting on web sites, social media, and blogs.

MayDay 2012 is Coming! Take One Emergency Preparedness Step on May 1st

Each year, cultural and historic preservation organizations set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay, an initiative to protect our nation's cultural heritage from disasters. With the blessings of Heritage Preservation, who initiated the event, CERF+ is encouraging all artists and arts organizations to participate by taking at one step on May 1 to become better prepared for emergencies. CERF+ believes that artists are the personification of our cultural heritage, and that it is as important for artists to protect their careers and legacies as it is for museums to protect their collections. Our preparedness Tips of the Month can help you choose the right step to take for MayDay. What step will you take? Like CERF+ on Facebook and let us know on May 1st!

CERF+ Director of Programs will be interviewed by Alison B. Stanfield on preparedness ideas for MayDay. The interview will be available on May 1 at http://www.artbizblog.com/.

Tip of the Month: Get Ready for MayDay!

Here are four things you can do without spending much (if any) money that will have a major impact on your emergency preparedness.

  1. Back up your computer and get a copy to a Safe Off-site Location (SOL*). A backup lying on your desk will protect you if your drive crashes, but will be of no use in a fire, flood, or other emergency.  Take the next step and store a copy in an SOL.*An SOL is a location 50-100 miles away from your studio that is not likely to be affected by the same emergency. This could be in a friend or relative’s house or an online backup. The Studio Protector Online Guide has more information on backing up your computer.
