THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

9-13 April 2018

On Monday (9 March), the Council may hold two meetings following Russia's request for a meeting on "threats to international pece and security: and the request from the Côte d'Ivoire, France, the Netherlands, Kuwait, Peru,Poland, Sweden, the UK and the US  to meet on reports of a chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria over the weekend.  

Also on Monday, there will be an Arria-formula meeting on “Enhancing synergies between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations to address the nexus between terrorism and transnational organized crime”.

On Tuesday (10 March), the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Said Djinnit, will brief the Council on the latest Secretary-General’s report on the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Region, followed by consultations.

On Wednesday (11 March), the Council will receive a briefing on Mali from the Special Representative and head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), Mahamat Saleh Annadif, followed by consultations. In addition, Ambassador Olof Skoog (Sweden) will brief the Council as chair of the 2374 Mali Sanctions Committee.

On Thursday (12 March), the chair of the 1540 Committee, Ambassador Sacha Sergio Llorentty Solíz (Bolivia) will brief the Council on the work of the committee, which deals with the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

By the end of the week, the Council is also expected to vote on a draft resolution that will extend the mandate of MINUJUSTH in Haiti. The draft resolution was put in blue on 5 April.

At the subsidiary body level, the 1591 Sudan Sanctions Committee will meet with its Panel of Experts on Monday (9 March) to be briefed on its preliminary programme of work. 

On Wednesday (11 March), the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee will meet with its Panel of Experts to discuss its final report and recommendations. It will also be briefed by the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Virginia Gamba.
