Creative Design announced for South KensingtonStephen Banham has been commissioned to develop a creative design treatment near South Kensington Station at the Metro Tunnel western entrance. Stephen’s design will be installed on a 300 metre-long floodwall, which provides flood protection for the Metro Tunnel. Stephen’s joyful design celebrates the local Kensington community’s connection to the much loved JJ Holland Park. The green tiled mosaic is a reference to subways and the area’s industrial past. Stephen is a typographer, designer, lecturer and writer with more than 30 years’ design experience. Some examples of his previous work include designs for a Melbourne Art Tram and ANZAC Square Brisbane. Installation is now underway, with most of the design to be completed by late 2021. Learn more. Ronald Edwards PepperThe work of Morwell-based Gunai artist Ronald Edwards Pepper recently took centre stage at City Square as part of the Yirramboi Festival for the Metro Tunnel Creative Program. Ronald uses non-traditional materials such as neon and glow-in-the-dark paint in his work, and incorporates five lines to represent the five clans of his Country. The bright colours of his work Emerging from the Darkness intentionally reflected the palette of Emma Coulter’s work on the upper part of the City Square acoustic shed. Regional Rail Revival Creative Strategy releasedRail Projects Victoria has released its Creative Strategy for regional projects. The Creative Strategy will help support the delivery of public art on the Regional Rail Revival program. The program will see upgrades to every regional rail line across the state. The Creative Strategy supports working with regional artists and cultural organisations, engaging local communities and celebrating the creative culture of Victoria’s First Peoples. Metro Tunnel and PHOTO 2021 PHOTO 2021 International Festival of Photography and the Metro Tunnel Creative Program partnered to present more than 500 metres of photographic art in the city as part of Melbourne’s new photographic festival. The Metro Tunnel Creative Program commissioned photographic works from 18 local and international artists. The works created an immersive, citywide trail of photography for the public. Responding to the theme The Truth, most of the artworks were commissioned especially for the festival or presented exclusively in Australia by the festival. Although the festival itself has ended, some works are still on display on the Metro Tunnel construction hoardings - such as works by Japanese artist Kenta Cobayashi (below) at our State Library Station precinct. Metro Tunnel and RISINGMelbourne's inaugural RISING festival included works by First Nations artists Jenna Lee (below), Dr Brian Martin and Moorina Bonini on the Metro Tunnel's City Square and Scott Alley construction hoardings. Under the title Moving Objects, the works were commissioned by RISING, Museums Victoria and YIRRAMBOI, and made possible by the Metro Tunnel Creative Program. |
