Dear
When I’m abroad I often rely on the print edition of The International New York Times for my daily dose of global current affairs. Thursday’s edition of the paper had an interesting article in the business section on how three army veterans who served in Afghanistan, buy and sell saffron from the war torn country.
Rumi Spice sells Afghan saffron - that has an intense flavour due to the climate - to the likes of The French Laundry and Dean & DeLuca. It’s interesting to read about these start-ups setting up in places likes Afghanistan that aim to make money, as well as benefit the country.
Have a good week.
Adam.

Métisse 2015, Maxime Magnon, Corbières, France
What do you do when you grow up in Burgundy, want to make wine, but you're not on the ancient hereditary line to inherit a plot of prime vineyard land? You think 'sod you lot then', and chip off down south where land is cheaper, the sun shines more often, nab some old vines that have been abandoned, and swashbuckle your way into potential 'cult winemaker' status. This is more of a light red than a rosé, startlingly pure, awash with tangy red fruits and chewy, serious texture. Mental sounding blend: 40% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 10% Grenache Blanc. Energising juice.

The Dumbwaiter
It’s chaos in the skies as British Airways has stopped serving a second meal on some of its medium and long-haul flights. The Dumbwaiter wonders how passengers can possibly survive not eating for a few hours? To fly. To serve (only one meal).
The Dumbwaiter was reading the FT Weekend and noted some invaluable advice from Rubin Hutson. The founder of the Pig hotel group, when asked for one travel tip, suggested travelling through airports in slip-on shoes as it, “saves lots of aggro at security and more comfortable on planes.” The Dumbwaiter agrees and suggests a cosy pair of Common Projects.
Don’t forget to grab a copy of Hello! magazine this week to see pictures of Gregg Wallace’s wedding. The MasterChef presenter married Anne-Marie Sterpini on 6 August after meeting her on Twitter in 2013. The Dumbwaiter hears that John Torode was best man and guests included Lisa Faulkner, Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti. Luvly jubbly.
