POWERHOUSE PARRAMATTA SETS OPENING DATEWestern Sydney’s first state cultural institution, Powerhouse Parramatta, will open its doors to the public on 7 November 2026. Located on the banks of the Parramatta River, the museum will be a major new landmark for Australia and a global cultural destination for Western Sydney. Its opening will mark the state's most significant cultural infrastructure project since the Sydney Opera House was completed in 1973. FOOD OPERATOR ANNOUNCED FOR
POWERHOUSE PARRAMATTAPowerhouse has announced Simon Sandall will lead retail food and beverage operations at Powerhouse Parramatta. The chef and restaurateur worked at the Sydney Opera House before joining Aria as Head Chef in 1999. He later became Group Executive Chef, overseeing venues including Chiswick, Aria Catering, Opera Bar and North Bondi Fish, among others. In 2018, he opened his own restaurant, Boronia Kitchen, in Hunters Hill. Mr Sandall will lead the food and beverage team across the Powerhouse Parramatta restaurant, cinema bar, cafe and wine bar.
TOP FOUR TRAVEL TRENDS FOR 2026The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has identified four travel trends in international arrivals data for the 2025-26 financial year, including Gen Z being the largest cohort of visitor arrivals. New Zealanders took 1.4 million trips to Australia during the period. They were also the most common travellers to Australia 10 years ago. The latest ABS data for June 2026 shows the three leading source countries for visitors to NSW were New Zealand (20,640 trips), China (18,640) and Singapore (15,530). Learn more here.
AUSTRALIANS KEEP SPENDING ON TRAVEL,
DINING AND RETAIL Australians continued to spend on retail, travel and dining in July 2026, with NAB's Consumer Spend Trend showing discretionary spending remained resilient despite ongoing global uncertainty and pressure on household budgets from fuel prices. Consumer spending was 7.7 per cent higher year-on-year, with spending on hotels, travel and transport rising 1.9 per cent, while spending at cafes and restaurants increased 1.1 per cent.
NSW PREMIER TO LEAD INDIA MISSIONPremier Chris Minns will lead an official delegation to India from 31 August to 3 September 2026, strengthening cultural, education, tourism and economic links with one of the state's most important international partners. The mission was announced at an 80th Independence Day of India event at ICC Sydney.
FUNDING BOOST FOR GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAYThe Australian Government will share the cost of rebuilding and future-proofing the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass with the NSW Government. The funding will see an additional lane delivered, permanently widening the critical link between the Blue Mountains and Central West.
HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT PROGRESSESThe Newcastle to Sydney High Speed Rail project has moved further into the Development Stage with three major construction consortia shortlisted for an Early Contractor Involvement process. High-speed trains will reduce travel time to around one hour between Newcastle and Sydney, while the journey between the Central Coast and either Newcastle or Sydney will be around 30 minutes.
GUIDE TO NEW EU SUSTAINABILITY RULESTourism Australia, Austrade and State and Territory Tourism Organisations have released an overview of the European Union's Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive to help the tourism industry prepare for the upcoming changes. The Directive includes new requirements for environmental and social claims made to consumers, which will come into effect on 27 September 2026.
AIRLINES INCREASE LUNAR NEW YEAR FLIGHTSFollowing a visitor surge during Lunar New Year 2026, airlines are boosting their flight schedules for the 2027 holiday period. Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Airlines and Vietjet Air are among the carriers that will expand their services into Sydney.
NSW RESTAURANT OF THE YEARBistro Livi in Murwillumbah has been named NSW state winner at the 2026 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards. Sydney restaurant Beppi’s received the Enduring Excellence award, while Sam Young from S'More was named Restaurant Personality of the Year.
ARIA AWARDS RETURN TO SYDNEYThe Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has announced the 2026 ARIA Awards will return to Australia’s creative industries capital, Sydney, on 18 November. Held for the sixth year running at the Hordern Pavilion, the 40th ARIA Awards will celebrate the best of Australian music, proudly supported by Destination NSW.
NATIONAL FARM TOURISM SURVEYTourism Australia has commissioned the National Farm Tourism Survey to better understand the current state of agritourism in Australia. The survey is open to farmers offering visitor experiences including farm stays, paddock tours and cellar doors. Responses will help establish the first benchmark for agritourism and its value.
PIERCE BROSNAN TOURS SYDNEY GALLERIESPierce Brosnan has given global exposure to Sydney art galleries on his social media channels. The actor, who has more than 4.6 million followers on Facebook and 2.1 million followers on Instagram, visited the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and two Paddington galleries.
