CPC Statement on the Separation and Deportation of Fei Zheng and Six-Year-Old Son Yuanxin Zheng

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC), a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that provides social services to Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI), immigrant and low-income communities in New York, released the following statement on the separation and deportation of Fei Zheng and his six-year-old son Yuanxin Zheng:

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is deeply saddened by the separation of six-year-old Yuanxin Zheng and his father, Fei Zheng, who were deported to China last week after nearly a month of being detained in separate facilities. They appeared for a routine immigration check-in on November 26th and were detained and separated. According to the New York Times, Mr. Zheng was seeking asylum for himself and his son due to credible fear of violence in his home country.

For more than 60 years, CPC has been committed to keeping children safe and families together. From child welfare prevention to afterschool programs, from public benefits enrollment to citizenship classes, from housing assistance to legal services, we ensure that families can stay healthy and whole and that community members can safely and positively interact with government agencies of all levels.

Mr. Zheng's case is not an isolated incident. According to the University of California, Berkeley, at least 140 children in New York City have been detained by federal agencies between January and October 2025. During that same timeframe, the national estimate is 2,600 children separated from their families.

We recognize that this incident may increase fears around immigration enforcement in our communities. CPC calls on the government to halt all policies of family separation of children from their parents which leaves lasting negative impacts, and to ensure the safety and dignity of every single person who interacts with government agencies of any kind. We remain committed to partnering with other community-based organizations and government agencies to ensure our immigrant communities have the resources they need to thrive.
