Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s May 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume increased by 0.5% during May 2017 compared to May 2016. Imports are now up 0.2% year-to-date.
  • Mexican imports grew by 4.7% in May 2017, following 22% growth in May 2016. Imports from Mexico are now flat year-to-date.
  • Imports coming directly from Belgium are down double digits year-to-date. However, it is important to remember that a lot of Belgian beer gets shipped through Germany on its way to the United States. Imports from Belgium and Germany are jointly up 10% over the last 12 months.
  • Dutch imports declined at double digit-rates in May, but their year-to-date trend is a much more modest -0.9%, which is a big improvement over the 12-month trend of -5.7%.
  • Imported cider volume was up 19% in May and is now up 16% year-to-date.
  • NA imports declined 27% in May, their third straight month of double-digit declines. NAs are now -15% year-to-date.

Exports

  • Exported beer volumes decreased by 2.7% in May and are now up 14.6% year-to-date.
  • NA exports increased by over 400% in May, driven by exports to Mexico, which were up over 2000%.
  • Cider exports were flat in May and are now down 1% year-to-date.
