ACADEMIC INTERVIEW: MIRELA BARBU

Mirela Barbu, Lecturer, Environment, Politics and Development Research Group

Why do you love geography?
I believe geography is a disciple that allows a 360°exploration of our world. Its various strands of investigation – physical, social, political, economic, cultural or historical geographies – provide a richness of content and a variety of methods that are not easily encountered in other disciplines.

What are your research passions?
I have always been interested in the transformation of the global economy and the policies which have played a crucial role in determining them. My research focuses on labour markets and welfare states’ restructuring. I also investigate processes and networks challenged by Europe globalization, focusing on the striking development of China.

Which masters courses do you teach?
I teach 'Tourism Conservation and Environment' at Masters level (TED). I give a number of lectures about ecotourism which aim to critically explore the politics and practices of environmental conservation.

Why did you choose to work at King's?
King’s is ranked among the world’s top universities and it is famously known for the quality of both research and teaching. I believe this reputation really counts for our academic staff and students. In choosing this department I was attracted by the prospect of carrying out research at international level, as well as by the strong focus on policy-related issues.

Your secret London tip?
I am fascinated by the continuous transformation of this city and by the various facets of its multi-cultural environment. I am intrigued by the scale of regeneration occurring in certain areas of London. I would recommend everybody to visit the Museum of London Docklands.
