With a new year comes new adventures and this month we are thrilled to announce the Grand Re-Opening of our new and improved Community Hub on Kitts Green Road. Our east Birmingham team have been based in Kitts Green for a year now working out of the small hub that was situated above our Birmingham Settlement charity shop on the ground floor. Over the last year Dom, Lisa and Nathaniel, funded by the Big Lottery, have really got to know the local community and with the support of local people and organisations have been able to establish a range of activities and services for the local community. As our work and the work of the wonderful local volunteers has grown, we found we needed more space so we have reviewed the layout of the hub and created a much bigger space for community activities which will allow us to focus far more on building engagement and supporting people to take more control of their own lives and over what happens within their community.

Our new, bigger and better hub now includes a big community space downstairs from which we will be delivering sessions such as Expressions music workshops for young people and our Craftin’ Around sessions, along with smaller office and meeting spaces upstairs.

Our Grand Re-Opening will take place on Monday 27th February and the Hub will be open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Expressions

Wednesdays: 6pm – 9pm (term time only)

Expressions is an evening workshop which takes place every Wednesday during term time from 6 till 9 pm. During the workshops we explore different types of music and write positive songs with a positive message. We also perform live with an acoustic guitarist.

Craftin’ Around

Fridays: 10am – 1pm (term time only)

Our new community crafts club takes place every Friday morning between 10am and 1pm (during term time) here at Birmingham Settlement’s Community Hub in Kitts Green. The club provides you with an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, gets you out of the house and could help to improve your wellbeing. We also have our Knitter’s Corner, open to everyone regardless of ability for those of you who just want to knit and natter.

You may already be an expert knitter or a dab hand with a paint brush, why not come along and share those skills with others or learn new ones. But you don’t have to be crafty or artistic. Just come along and enjoy! It’s just £1 per person which helps us to cover the cost of materials.

Safer Communities Project

Tuesdays: 1pm – 3pm (term time only)

Our Safer Communities Project aims to tackle youth violence and issues such as knife crime, antisocial behaviour, the consequences of carrying a weapon and the joint enterprise law and how it can affect young people who are not even associated with gangs.

Due to the huge increase in youth violence during 2016 Birmingham Settlement have launched a project called ‘Respect a life drop a knife’. Our aim is to reduce knife crime and the carrying of knives and raise awareness around gang culture, anti-social behaviour and youth exclusion.

Birmingham Settlement will be delivering workshops and equipping people with the tools to be able to help tackle and highlight the issues that arise. Some of the key elements that the workshops will cover are:
• Joint enterprise
• The laws around carrying knifes
• Choices and consequences of gang violence
• The ripple effects of knife crime
• The impact of having a criminal record

DiVas Coffee Morning

Wednesdays: 10am (term time only)

DiVas, the peer support group run by women for women in and around Kitts Green, holds its weekly coffee morning at Birmingham Settlement’s Community Hub in Kitts Green every Wednesday from 10am (term time only). DiVas Coffee Morning offers a place where you feel welcome and no one is judged, providing a relaxed, safe environment, a friendly ear and an opportunity for you to get out of the house, meet new people and have a chat.

So, why not come along and meet the DiVas team of volunteers and whilst you’re here, make new friends, get involved in activities, have a coffee and find out more about what is going on in your local community.

Event Management Workshops

Starting Tuesday 28th February for 12 weeks (term time only)
Tuesdays: 1pm to 3pm

The team at Birmingham Settlement’s Community Hub on Kitts Green Road are looking for Volunteer Event Assistants to help us plan and deliver community events.

To support you in that role we are offering a programme of 12 FREE workshops which will take place on Tuesday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm here at Birmingham Settlement’s Community Hub on Kitts Green Road. Alongside the workshops we will offer you one to one support and a personal development plan.

The course will cover event management, health and safety, publicity and budgeting. We will also provide you with an opportunity to help plan an event so that you can get involved in your community and really make a difference as well as providing you with new skills and real work based experience which you can add to your CV.

Remembering Lea Village Coffee Morning

Tuesdays: 10am – 1pm (term time only)

The Remembering Lea Village Coffee Morning welcomes older people and the wider community every Tuesday from 10am until 1pm. The Coffee Morning takes place at our Hub on Kitts Green Road and will feature different activities and projects throughout the year such as our Memory Bank project, giving people the opportunity to bring in old memorabilia and share past experiences about their life.

Clean and Green Afternoon

Fridays: 1pm – 3pm (term time only)

Are you concerned about the way Kitts Green and surrounding areas look? Do you worry about rubbish or litter? Do you know about recycling or wonder what a carbon footprint is?

If the answer is YES, then why not drop along to our Clean and Green Afternoon held every Friday (during term time) between 1pm and 3pm at the Kitts Green Road Hub. Clean and Green Afternoons will provide you with a very informal opportunity to meet other people who may be concerned about their local environment or environmental issues. Come along for a chat, voice your concerns, share ideas and get involved in projects that may help to tackle some of the issues facing your community.

Mondays: Appointment Only

Our Money Advice Team are now available every Monday at Birmingham Settlement’s Community Hub for free, independent and confidential advice on welfare benefits, dealing with debt and managing your money.

You will need to make an appointment which you can do by calling 0121 603 8924 or by dropping in and having a chat with a member of staff. We are also now able to make referrals to The Kingfisher Foodbank for people living within the B33, B34, B36 and B37 postcodes.
