Editor's note

With the federal government this week replacing 457 visas and making changes to Australia’s citizenship test, Michelle Grattan wonders if the prime minister has forsaken his own political values in favour of populist policies that tap into an array of community insecurities such as jobs, crime or terrorism. And beyond the targeting of particular groups, the new questions are simply bizarre - there may well be a test that could identify a person’s values, but it would need to be far more sophisticated and extensive than this one.
