The Half-Life of Marie Curie
In 1911, Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. By 1912, she was the object of ruthless gossip over an alleged affair with the married Frenchman Paul Langevin, all but erasing her achievements from public memory. Weakened and demoralized by the press lambasting her as a “foreign” Jewish temptress and a homewrecking traitor, Marie agrees to join her friend and colleague Hertha Ayrton, an electromechanical engineer and suffragette, at her summer home in England. THE HALF-LIFE OF MARIE CURIE revels in the power of female friendship as it explores the relationship between these two brilliant women, both of whom are mothers, widows, and fearless champions of scientific inquiry. ABOUT THE ORANGE GIRLS The Orange Girls theatre company was founded by Meghan Baker, Michelle Hand and Brooke Edwards to give the talented female actors, directors, and designers of St. Louis an opportunity to find artistically challenging work and to encourage audiences to broaden their definition of the roles women play on stage and in the world. Orange Girls bring together actors, directors, and designers of all genders work together to create performances that garner a whole new audience for women’s contributions to the theatrical arts. ABOUT ST. LOUIS ACTORS’ STUDIO St. Louis Actors’ Studio is one of the leading professional theatres in the St. Louis. area, producing a multi-show season of plays at our 97-seat Gaslight Theatre. STLAS collaborates with renown director, screenwriter and playwright Neil LaBute to produce the LaBute New Theater Festival each July in St. Louis and in New York City.
