Don’t Eat Bon Bons and Get Fat – 7 Ways to Avoid Interruptions

Header

by Susan Fennema

I’m sure you’ve all seen the 2012 DirecTV commercials – they result in awesome lines like, “Don’t end up in a roadside ditch”, “Don’t have a grandson with a dog collar” or “Don’t re-enact scenes from Platoon with Charlie Sheen.” I love these commercials because they are about how a little thing (like arguing with your cable company) can result in these hugely ridiculous life-changing events. Not managing interruptions can have the same effect, so forgive my blatant plagiarism, but:

  • when you get interrupted, you yell at coworkers
  • when you yell at coworkers, you get fired for anger issues
  • when you get fired for anger issues, you watch soap operas all day
  • when you watch soap operas all day, you eat bon bons and get fat
  • don’t eat bon bons and get fat – learn to manage your interruptions!

The Primal Challenges of Custom Software Development

Header

by Darren Burgess

I've been thinking lately about the challenges of custom software development and why I do what I do. For that we first need to explore my workout last week at Go Primal Fitness - Power Endurance/Power Strength.

Phase 1
Dumbbell Complex, 6 reps each:
Biceps Curl, Hi-Pull, Bent-Over Row, Thruster, Lateral Lunge, Push-up
3 rounds = 1 sets, do 2 sets (increase weight on second set)

Monitoring the Web Publishing Engine in FileMaker Server 11

Header

by Anders Monsen

FileMaker Server 11 includes several components to publish databases to client machines. The Database Server is perhaps the most obvious component, as this hosts the databases that are shared with clients.

Any type of web publishing requires the Web Publishing Engine (WPE) to be active and running. Custom web publishing such as PHP communicates to the Database Server via the WPE. But what happens when a web page is no longer is responsive? Which process failed? Is it a page error, a Database Server problem, or an issue with the WPE? As you can imagine, manually checking the state of the server becomes tedious.

FileMaker 12 Product Line Is Available!

Header

FileMaker Inc. (FMI) released the new FileMaker 12 product line. This release includes new versions of FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server and FileMaker Go.

The most important thing to know is this version introduces a new file format (.fmp12 instead of .fp7). This means once you convert a database to FileMaker 12, you cannot go back to an earlier version.

If your FileMaker Maintenance is active, you should be receiving an email from FMI to download the new version. In the meantime, our advice is to learn about the new product line and carefully plan a transition to it. If you are not sure whether you have FileMaker Maintenance or have questions about moving to FileMaker 12, give Dave Weisiger a call at 972-390-8600 x103.
