1. Diversity Statement to the Campus Community
When issues of racism, sexism, homophobia and/or other negatives surface anywhere on campus, it is important to remind ourselves of what we stand for as a university. In valuing diversity and inclusion, we cannot allow the negative “isms” to infect any part of our community or create a hostile learning or work environment for our students, faculty and staff. We must affirm that there are consequences for exhibiting behaviors that serve to harass, alienate and demoralize students or employees.
It is important to note that there are structures in place to address issues when they arise. If an issue is found to be in violation of university policy such as sexual harassment or discrimination, it is investigated; if it is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct, the case will be adjudicated. Hate crimes are illegal and are referred to the police. In all instances, the protocol is to respond rapidly to address the situation.
What we stand for as a university is captured in our Diversity Vision Statement.
