Square Construction Begins January 30, 2017
|
|
Starting January 30th, Pioneer Courthouse Square will be undergoing major repairs and renovation thanks to the Parks Replacement Bond approved by voters in November 2014. Due to a small part of this project (public restroom expansion) being eligible for System Development Charge funding, the Parks SDC fund is contributing $150,000, and will include a full-time restroom attendant to support restroom operations for the over 301,000 annual public restroom users.
This Parks Replacement Bond project includes:
-
Replacing the waterproof membrane under the bricks on the upper tier of the Square along SW Broadway and SW Yamhill Streets
-
Stoa column terra cotta repairs
-
Site accessibility improvements
-
All-user restroom renovation
-
Repair of the HVAC system
For the duration of the project, from January 30-July 28, 2017, the public restrooms will be closed. The businesses located at the Square will remain open. Alternate public restrooms in downtown can be found here.
As part of the Parks Replacement Bond project, all of the named bricks impacted by construction in the Square in 2017 will be replaced. If you have questions about your brick or would like to buy a new brick, please call 503-223-1613 or email ashley@thesquarepdx.org.
Information about the upcoming Parks Replacement Bond renovations, including project background, overview, and schedule, can be found here.

Holidays at the Square
|
|
The holiday season programming at the Square was festive and exciting this year! Kicking off the season was the 32nd Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony Presented by SmartPark on November 25th. Keeping things fun and festive, the Square hosted free community Atmospheric performances throughout the month of December! These performances included local school groups like the Beverly Cleary and Alameda School Choirs, acapella from Without Apology, and more!
In partnership with Portland Mall Management, Inc., The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition returned with 9 singing groups positioned along SW Morrison and SW Yamhill Streets. This competition was judged by The Dickens Carolers. First year competitors the B-Side Book Club took home the grand prize of $1,000, and returning group Four Calling Birds won the coveted People's Choice Award!
The 26th Annual Tuba Christmas presented by SmartPark took over the Square on December 10th. This year's concert featured over 235 tubists who braved the snow to play in unison at this beloved community tradition!
