The Multicultural Victoria magazine is back and available now! The new-look MV magazine is better and brighter than ever and still offers the best mix of multicultural news and features in Victoria. The first edition includes a feature profiling the new VMC Commissioners and an inspirational look at the Multicultural Awards for Excellence winners, as well as grants updates, competitions and much more. The February edition also includes a look at the 10th Cultural Diversity Week celebrations. This year the week will run from 17-25 March, coinciding with the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March. The week is a chance for all Victorians to come together to share aspects of their culture, faith, language and celebrate the benefits multiculturalism brings to our state. A highlight of the week-long celebrations is Viva Victoria, a free one-day festival of spectacular musical and dance performances across three stages as well as global food, cultural arts and crafts market stalls and kid’s activities – a fun, family day out not to be missed. If you would like to subscribe to MV, submit an article for a future issue or give us your feedback simply email the Victorian Multicultural Commission at info@vmc.vic.gov.au or contact us for more information on (03) 9651 1101. Join in the fun at Viva Victoria 2012!

You’ll find lots of activities to keep the whole family entertained at this year’s Viva Victoria Festival held at Federation Square on Sunday 25 March. An exciting new addition to 2012 is  the Photo Booth Project. Public housing residents from culturally diverse backgrounds helped to provide a snapshot of our cultural diversity, bringing multiculturalism to life. Also new this year is the opportunity to have a go at creating your own piece of  beautiful Turkish art. The ancient Indian art of Rangoli is back again this year (see picture), while kids of all ages will be kept happy with puppet-making, face-painting and more. Viva Festival Programs will be available to order from our website soon.

New grants program for CALD Seniors

A new small grants program to create or expand opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) seniors to participate in the community is opening on 5 March 2012. Positive ageing research shows that being socially active is important to your health and wellbeing. As part of the Victorian Government’s Participation for CALD Seniors Grants Program, eligible organisations can apply for up to $10,000 to help generate opportunities for socially isolated CALD seniors to participate in their local communities. Four grant rounds will be run over four years. The Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria (ECCV) is an implementation partner with the Victorian Government for the Participation for CALD Seniors Grants Program. As well as providing assistance and advice to grant applicants, the ECCV will also provide support to grant recipients on their projects. The first round for applications opens on 5 March 2012 and will close on 27 April 2012. More information about the grants is available by contacting Georgia Nicholls on (03) 9096 1052, and will be available on the Seniors Online website at  http://www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au from Monday 5 March.

Big Bento Lunch fundraiser

March 11 is the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit north eastern Japan. To commemorate the disaster and raise much-needed funds for UNICEF’s ongoing recovery work in the affected regions of the country, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association (JETAA) based in Melbourne, is encouraging people to get together to have a Big Bento Lunch Japanese-style and collect donations. The initiative is running between 11 and 17 March and offices, homes, schools, community groups and restaurants across Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide are encouraged to take part. The funds raised will go, via UNICEF, to help open temporary schools and provide medical aid and vaccinations for children in the affected areas.
