Parking Lot Construction Update -- a "Hole" Lot of Work Completed

Completed sectons of the parking lot near Anderson Hall are set to be available in time for the start of work next week.

The new entrance and access point  is complete and  is moving traffic to Lot E, and the  east entrance (traffic light) will be open as well.  This project is not  completely finished but is far enough along to allow  it to be used.  Please observe all barricade signage and fencing.

There is a section (slated for a drainage system) still to be finished in the centre of the construction zone. It has required more excavation than originally thought to remove unsuitable earth.

Recent rains have also delayed work in this specific area, because the new  system in place to direct water runoff worked  as it should (good news!)  and directed the water to the still-unfinished  hole (not-so-good news!). It is expected to be complete by the end of September.

Get more details here.

Campus Summer Construction Project Updates

According to Project Management Office director Brian Sullivan,  some parts of campus will look like the final completion segment from a TV renovation show, but on a much larger scale.

With several key projects  slated for substantial completion prior to the start of the school year,  crews have been working weekends and evenings  to move things forward.

Here is an overview of projects, and their staus:

University Centre for the Arts Ventilation Upgrade

The system is being tested, and people are returning to their offices this week.

Wellness Centre Renovation

The south entrance, stairwell and the pool day use change rooms will not be completed until the end of September. The contractors are working long hours to ensure that this project is almost complete at the end of this coming weekend. None of the ongoing processes will affect classroom use.

Sports Medicine Clinic

This space is expected to be  complete and open in early October

Fire Door Replacement, University Hall

This project is on track and all items affecting classes are complete. The balance of the work will be done after hours.

Quad Project

The first phase of the project is not scheduled for completion until the end of September.

Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre

Bulkheads need to be re-painted,  a project that will delay the pool opening by one week.

Word on the Street Festival -- Volunteers Needed

Inline Image

The 2012 Word on the Street Festival takes place on Sunday, September 23 downtown on the streets and parking lot surrounding the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch, located on the corner of Stafford Drive and 5th Ave. S.

A very successful launch last year saw more than 2,000 people take in a full day of music, readings, family activities and fun for all ages.

The U of L is supporting this festival again -- the Bookstore is a partner and will be on site, several student clubs and individual students have agreed to take on specific projects, and numerous faculty and staff volunteer their time.

This year's event promises to be bigger and better, and is still Alberta's only Word on the Street festival!

You can help with this event by volunteering for a variety of projects. Learn more here.
