New Zealand School of Music - Dawn Chorus nzsm_header
May 2012 – Part 1
Dawn Chorus

With a plethora of events in the next few weeks, the May Dawn Chorus will come to you in two half-editions.

What a first half-Trimester!
We have had some fantastic events already this year and a 'keyboard' theme is emerging. Following the revelation of our new Steinway in March we have already had four fabulous keyboard performances: Iberia from Guillermo González, Beethoven's Emperor Concerto from Diedre Irons and the NZSM Orchestra, Erin Helyard's evening of Bach(s) at the harpsichord and Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak wowing us with an all-Russian programme.

It doesn't stop there....in just the next fortnight we host international fortepianist Bart van Oort, and NZ Arts Laureate Michael Houstoun, with more to come in July and August from our own Jian Liu and Chinese virtuoso Xiang Zou.

By the way, photos from these keyboard events can be found on our NZSM facebook page (and ANYbody can see them - even if you are not a 'facebooker'!) and if you missed the last NZSM Orchestra concert recordings of the works can be found at the bottom of the event listing here. The next NZSM Orchestra concert is on Tuesday 29 May.

Houstoun plays Goldberg

Poster for Houstoun's concert

New Zealand Artist Laureate Michael Houstoun will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations in a very special Sunday afternoon concert.

By his own admission, Michael has 'fallen in love' with this famous and popular work. While theories of hidden meanings and esoteric layers within Bach's compositions abound – the Goldberg Variations more than most – the work is undoubtedly profound and appeals to audiences at many levels: emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual.

Michael will perform the variations straight through with no interval. Recent concerts in ACR have been 'packed out', so pre-booking seats through Eventfinder is highly recommended.

Sunday 13 May: 4:00pm: Michael Houstoun: The Goldberg Variations
Adam Concert Room, NZSM Kelburn Campus
