I'm loving the colourful artwork on the Chorus cabinet on Ferry Road – big thanks to artist Nick Lowry for his great work. It was wonderful to get together and celebrate with the winners of our 2021 Community Service Awards last month. Thanks to all our volunteers for the great work you do in our community. There are so many fantastic playgrounds, parks, walkways and the river to explore in our Linwood-Central-Heathcote area. I hope you can wrap up warm and get out there. Board Chair, Alexandra Davids Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Wednesday 14 July. Some highlights of our meeting included approving the revised landscape plan for Te Papa Kura Redcliffs Park to include a new swing set, small slide, nature play and safety surfacing. We approved short-term drop-off/pick-up parking and a mobility park outside the new Ravenscar House, due to open in September 2021. We also received our Waikura Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board Area Report for July 2021, which gives our Board an overview of all the great things happening in our community. New artwork brightens up Ferry RoadLocal artist Nick Lowry has worked with Christchurch City Council's Graffiti Team to create this beautiful piece on Ferry Road, next to Woolston Park. What's been happening in our areaEach month our community board receives our Waikura Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board Area Report, which gives our Board an overview of all the great things happening in our community. Bromley trafficWe're looking at ways to improve Bromley's roads, parks and infrastructure. Staff briefed the Board on possible options for this project going forward on 23 June 2021. Ōpāwaho (Lower Heathcote) River Working PartyA drop-in session was held on Tuesday 15 June to engage the wider community in this project. Feedback and ideas from this event are being collated to present at the next Ōpāwaho (Lower Heathcote) River Working Party meeting. Sustainability Charter launchTo help improve community resilience and preparedness for the impacts of climate change, we're working on a Sustainability Charter. The draft design has been completed and was presented to the Board for discussion on 7 July 2021. Options are being considered on how to commemorate the signing of the Sustainability Charter. Community Services AwardThe Waikura Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board held its 2021 Community Services Award ceremony on 14 June 2021 at Woolston Club. There are nine nominees and eight of them accepted the awards. Seven award recipients attended the ceremony with their friends and family. Thanks to everyone who came along and for all the great work you do to make our community a better place. Heathcote Valley Mountain BikingThe Heathcote Valley Mountain Biking group recently held their second winter dig event and saw another 30 square metres of dirt added to the existing mounds. The bike track and jumps have been maintained and built by a group of keen mountain bikers in Heathcote who with the help of Christchurch City Council Park Rangers, Trees for Canterbury, Port Hills Earthworks and other private donors have added more than 500 native plants and a significant amount of fresh earth for the mounds. The group have a goal of planting 1000 natives and have three more winter working bees planned each second Sunday of the month throughout winter. More than 1000 hours work has been put into building and maintaining the park so far, all by volunteers from the community. Council works with community to restore the Tunnel Road SaltmarshA new project alongside the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River immediately downstream of the Tunnel Road Bridge has been set up to restore the salt marsh and coastal bush habitat. Christchurch City Council's Parks Biodiversity and Regional Parks Ranger teams have initiated a habitat restoration project to enable the shallow inflow of tidal water to regenerate saltmarsh vegetation and enable self-colonisation of marsh plants over an area of burnt ground. Spring opening for new Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood PoolLinwood’s new pool complex Te Pou Toetoe will open ahead of schedule, with construction set to finish ahead of time and within budget. Friday 1 October has been earmarked for opening the much-anticipated $22 million facility to the public. It’s been a year since the first sod was turned on Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool. The facility on the corner of Smith Street and Linwood Avenue will have a multi-use 25-metre lane pool, a deep water splash pool, a family spa pool, a learn-to-swim pool, and a pool and water deck for toddlers. There will also be a kitchen and two community rooms, while outside there will be picnic tables, tennis, basketball and multi-use courts, cycle stands, parking and plenty of open areas for all ages to enjoy. A formal opening with guests will take place on the afternoon of Friday 1 October with opening activities planned over the weekend. Linwood Councillor Yani Johanson has welcomed the opening date announcement. “It is great to see the much anticipated facility coming close to completion. It is a true testament to the hard work of so many people who have advocated for this pool over the past 20 years to see it become a reality." Hyperfibre coming to Christchurch's CBDChristchurch City owned and operated fibre broadband provider, Enable, is bringing Hyperfibre to Christchurch from early August. The next generation of fibre technology will be made available across Christchurch’s Central Business District to support the ongoing growth of the city ahead of its rollout across the community. High Street makeover gets underwayWork to fix earthquake-damaged High Street and create a vibrant, people-friendly environment is under way. The makeover started on Monday and the invasive works are expected to be finished in late November/early December. The contractor will then return to complete more minor streetscape works. Christchurch in market for e-scooter providersChristchurch City Council is scoping the market for companies interested in providing e-bikes and e-scooters for public hire. Convention centre to host Christchurch’s innovation expoA two day expo at Christchurch’s new convention and exhibition centre, Te Pae, is set to strengthen the city’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation and technology growth. Avon River stopbanks subject of new risk assessmentA new risk assessment of the current stopbanks along the Ōtākaro Avon River has confirmed they are capable of containing a tide associated with a one-in-100 year storm event.
