Future Unfolding #1

Hello!
We're sending out this newsletter once a month to share news about Future Unfolding and behind-the-scenes stuff from our development process with you.

Proceduralism

To start off, we'd like to talk a bit about how the procedural world generation works in Future Unfolding. People often think procedural generation means putting random functions everywhere, but it's a bit more complex than that in practice.

In our case, we use procedural generation to add tons of variation to the game, so that every player has a unique world to explore. At the same time, we work hard to make the game world not feel random.

Below are three screenshots taken from the same location in the game. You can see that the most important level elements (the path and the blue rock) are the same for all players, while everything else is unique.

Come meet us in San Francisco

In the first week of March, we'll be back in San Francisco with the whole team to attend the Game Developers Conference. If you're there, make sure to say hi! You'll also be able to play Future Unfolding at the Mild Rumpus Showcase alongside other great games that are all about exploration.

If you want to learn more about the procedural world generation in Future Unfolding, don't miss the Tech Toolbox session where our lead developer Mattias (@maljx) will discuss our custom level editor.

What's next?

Anything you'd like us to talk about in the next newsletter? Let us know on Twitter (@spacesofplay).

If you're fan and want to support us, please spread the word about the newsletter on Facebook or Twitter. It helps us to build an audience prior to the launch next year, which is really important for a small studio like us!

Until next month,
