Welcome to our new and improved newsletter. We will take this opportunity to share what’s going on here at TAI Lake Oswego in “Clinic News”, highlight some of our stellar patients in our “Patient Spotlight”, and help educate you about the ins and outs of what we do as physical therapists in our “Learning Corner”.  If there’s ever a topic you would like to learn more about, please let us know.  We have a diverse staff of qualified professionals who enjoy sharing their knowledge. Enjoy!

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
& Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

The SFMA is an assessment tool used by clinicians to evaluate movement patterns throughout the body in order to drive a treatment plan – including manual therapy interventions and therapeutic exercise prescription.  The SFMA was developed by world-renowned physical therapist Gray Cook to create a structured pattern for functional movement assessment, starting with 7 “top tier” movements required for normal movement through all populations including elite athletes.  The SFMA allows us as clinicians to go from a global movement assessment to a fine-tuned, anatomically relevant evaluation of the areas associated with pain and symptoms.

The FMS, in contrast, is a screen that highlights movement impairments at higher functional movements.  The screen reveals range, strength, and motor control deficits without diagnosing the cause.  It is a helpful tool in a healthy, active population and it serves as a great baseline measure as it can identify risk of injury and show progress over time - it is used through all levels of training from the NFL to fire departments.  A passing score on the FMS serves as a prerequisite for more aggressive activity including personal training and athletic performance, while a sub-par score may indicate the need for clinical intervention.  All TAI Lake Oswego staff has been introduced to the FMS and can take clients through the screen for baseline testing.  Together, the SFMA and FMS create a movement system that we use to assess our clients and develop optimal treatment and programming for progression through both rehab and performance.

Aaron Dolfay

Aaron came to physical therapy in November of last year, following a meniscus repair from a football injury with direct contact to the knee.  Over the next 6 months, he worked hard in both physical therapy and personal training to improve his strength, range of motion, and movement mechanics.  He progressed back into more dynamic return to sport activities to prepare him for returning to the field.  We were excited to hear that he is happily and successfully participating in his high school football season this fall.  We received the followed email from his father a few months ago:

In November 2013 my son, Aaron Dolfay, started with therapy sessions with Rajesh for a torn meniscus and some other minor damage in his right knee.  His therapy lasted until May 2014 in which Aaron was going 2 to 3 times a week the majority of time. During his time he worked with Rajesh, Kayla, Kyle and DJ.  Aaron enjoyed everybody he worked with at your clinic.

I am proud to let you know Aaron is back on the football field at his high school, Rex Putnam High in Milwaukie.  He is set to open his season this Friday and will be starting lineman on both offense & defense.

I just wanted to thank everybody there at LO Fit for helping Aaron get back to playing the sport he loves!!

Thank You,

Ed Dolfay

Congrats, Aaron! We are proud of your accomplishments, and so glad to have been a part of your successful journey back to the field.

Dan Murphy

Dan started physical therapy in June for knee pain, after undergoing arthroscopic surgery/menisectomy, with the goal of returning to running as soon as possible.  He came in lacking full range of motion with strength and motor control deficits, and a lack of confidence when loading the left leg.  He fully committed to treatment, stuck with his exercise program, and “graduated” from therapy about two months later.
Dan successfully completed the Urban Raid obstacle course in New York on September 20th.  This 5k race includes varied terrain and over a dozen obstacles geared toward challenging balance, strength, stability, and endurance.  Dan sent us the following email:

Just under four months from surgery I was able to complete all the obstacles and came in 4th out of 18 in my age group and 81st out of 320 overall. Knee feels fine. Am continuing to do the exercises, especially the stretching.

Thanks for your help in getting me back up to speed!

Dan

Congratulations, Dan, and thank you for sharing your story.  We hope that you inspire others with your hard work and determination to return to the things you love.  Thank you for thinking of us on your adventure – we have loved being a part of your recovery and success.

Soccer Seminar

A big thank you to all who participated in our fall seminar!  The night was a big success with about 30 guests.  A special thank you to Rachel Van Hollebeke (Buehler) of the Portland Thorns for her guest appearance.  The night was fun and educational, with topics including injury prevention, sports nutrition, and balancing school and athletics.  Thanks for coming out and we look forward to an even bigger audience at our next event.
