Inscriptions can include up to 18 characters on a standard keyboard. Proceeds from each brick sale support maintenance and programming of the park.

The next brick installation is scheduled for July 2017. To be included, brick orders need to be completed by May 19.

Parks Replacement Bond Construction Continues

Waste from demolition is one of the biggest sources of trash in the country. Portland is known for its commitment to recycling and sustainability.  For the Parks Replacement Bond renovations at the Square, the construction team with Howard S. Wright and Faison Construction have been working with local demolition subcontractor PAS Construction and woman-owned Greenway Recycling to minimize waste through an ambitious waste management plan. The plan includes the recycling of nearly 10 different materials. According to Greenway Recycling Manager Eric Wentland, about 62% of the total waste collected at their facility from the Square and other sites during the last few months has been recovered.

Construction crew members toss all construction debris into clearly marked recycling dumpsters at the Square. These are then hauled to the Greenway recycling facility where workers hand sort materials for recycling.

The lion’s share of the project’s waste is from bricks, masonry, and concrete. At Greenway, these get crushed together and are being used to construct a roadbed for the approach to the Hillsboro Landfill. Copper tubing and wiring gets stripped, melted, and turned into new wiring and tubing. Other metals are melted together and used to create any number of products – from nails to new sports cars. The wood is sent for chipping to be used as boiler fuel at paper and plywood mills. Instead of costing the City more, project managers are actually saving money with this recycling program, allowing for additional much-needed repairs to be completed at the Square.

Did You Know?
2015 Time Capsule

In 1985, to celebrate the Square’s first year of operation, more than 50 items symbolizing Portland were placed into a time capsule and buried at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The time capsule was unveiled for the very first time thirty years later in May 2014. In celebration of the Square's 30th birthday, a jury of esteemed Portlanders identified a select number of items that best represented Portland in 2015 to be included in the new time capsule. The items were sealed in the time capsule for future generations of Portlanders to open on the Square’s 50th Anniversary in 2034. To view the gallery of the quintessential Portland items included in the new time capsule, click here
