Hazardous Substances Update #202

Kia ora tatou,

In this issue, read the latest from the methyl bromide hearing, import reminders on mothballs and fireworks, and a status check on two new substances that protect potatoes.

News

Methyl bromide

A decision-making committee is now considering the outcome of the modified reassessment of methyl bromide.

This follows a five-day online hearing in mid-August about recapture rules for the log fumigant.

Reminder: mothballs are mothballed

We have issued a caution notice, and a formal warning, in regard to banned naphthalene mothballs being imported and sold through specialty Indian supermarkets in the Auckland region.

Submissions open on Soleto

We are seeking views on an application to import or manufacture Soleto, a broad spectrum herbicide for potatoes.

Approval for Boxer Gold

A new herbicide that controls potato weeds, like black nightshade, has been approved for use in New Zealand, subject to conditions.

Streamlining pesticide paperwork

We have updated the online application form for import or manufacture of pesticides, and created guidance for completing it.

These changes have been designed to make the overall application process easier and more efficient. Applications on the previous form (dated May 2015) will be accepted until October 2020, after which we will only accept applications on the new form.

Reminder: import certificate required for fireworks

All retail fireworks require an import certificate from the EPA, and also require testing by a fireworks certifier before they can be sold.

Import certificates are normally processed in ten working days, after we have all the information we need. At busy times, such as in preparation for Guy Fawkes, this timeframe may be longer.

Fireworks can only be sold 2-5 November, and sparklers can only be sold as part of a fireworks package.

Remember that as importers of hazardous substances, you need to be on the Importers and Manufacturer’s register.
