What's Up Downtown - Holiday Issue The Downtown OKC, Inc. staff would like to wish you and your families a very happy holiday season. This year, we're celebrating the 10th annual Downtown in December - a series of events that have seen unpresedented success and attendance over the past several weeks. Devon Ice Rink serves as Downtown in December's signature event Downtown in December, presented by Devon, is in full swing and thousands have already experienced downtown's premiere holiday attraction - the Devon Ice Rink. This year, the rink has found a new home in the newly renovated Myriad Gardens. The rink is a permanent structure that will serve as a water feature and plaza in the warmer months. Chesapeake & RedHawks Field host region's largest snow slide Chesapeake Snow Tubing at RedHawks Field at Bricktown is back by popular demand at the 10th annual Downtown in December, presented by Devon. Feel the wind in your face as you cruise down the slope at thrilling speeds at one of downtown Oklahoma City's favorite holiday attractions. “Over the field we go” will have new meaning as riders slide from the ballpark’s upper deck all the way to the field on a hill of manmade snow. The snow tubes and snow are even provided in sunny weather and for those seeking less of an adrenaline rush, a second, smaller slide will have children and moderate thrill seekers dashing through the snow. “It is a pleasure for Chesapeake to help bring a little holiday magic to Oklahoma City families through the Chesapeake Energy Snow Tubing at the Redhawks Field at Bricktown,” said Teresa Rose, Chesapeake Director – Community Relations. “We are thrilled with the feedback we receive from families and are happy to help play a part in making some memories during this festive season.” Admission and Hours of Operation Dec. 12-15: noon - 4 p.m. Purchase Your Tickets Sessions fill up fast, so buy your tickets online to reserve your session time. Sonic Segway Santa hits the streets of downtown OKC Sonic Segway Santa has been hitting the streets of downtown OKC for the past few weeks. Folks are always excited to see The Big Guy cruising down the sidewalk because he appears randomly at Downtown in December events to spread holiday cheer and, more importantly, treats from Sonic, including peppermints and gift cards. Oklahoma City Community Foundation hosts Free Museum Sundays The Oklahoma City Community Foundation teamed up with 4 downtown museums to offer free admission throughout Downtown in December, presented by Devon. Over the past several weeks, thousands of visitors have experienced music, art history and culture in the heart of Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, and the American Banjo Museum. Join us for the final week of OCCF's Free Museum Sundays on Dec. 18th and enjoy free admission to the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum located at 1400 Classen Dr. To celebrate Downtown in December, the museum will host family activities, including visits with Santa, arts and crafts, children's dress-up stations and offer holiday discounts. Thanks to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and the participating museums for making this possible!
SandRidge Christmas Tree lights up Bricktown The 32-foot-tall SandRidge Christmas Tree serves as the festive centerpiece for Downtown in December, presented by Devon. On Nov. 25, thousands gathered to watch Mayor Mick Cornett and Santa Claus as they flipped the switch to light the beautifully-adorned tree for the holiday season at the SandRidge Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The lighting of the SandRidge Christmas Tree officially kicked off downtown Oklahoma City's month-long holiday celebration. “This is our fifth year to partner with Downtown OKC, Inc. and it’s been exciting to be a part of growth of the annual Downtown in December celebration,” said SandRidge Vice President of Communications, Greg Dewey. “SandRidge has always been excited about being a part of the downtown community and participating in Downtown in December is a great way to celebrate the holiday season with our neighbors.” The SandRidge Christmas will be on display at the corner of Reno and Mickey Mantle Drive through Jan. 1.
Enjoy free family entertainment at Devon's Saturdays with SantaThe newest event to be added to the Downtown in December lineup is Devon's Saturdays with Santa. This free event takes place weekly in the newly renovated Myriad Gardens and gives kids of all ages the opportunity to visit with Santa, create holiday-themed arts and crafts, send letters to the North Pole, enjoy snacks and play in the new Children's Garden. Thousands of guests have participated over the last three weeks to visit Santa and special guests like Rumble the Bison and Mrs. Claus. Devon will present the final Saturdays with Santa on Dec. 17 from noon - 3 p.m. in the Myriad Gardens Pavilion. Special guest Spaghetti Eddie will be there to provide comical music entertainment for adult and children alike.
The Oklahoman offers free Bricktown canal water taxi rides There's no better time to enjoy the Bricktown canal than during Downtown in December, presented by Devon. The Oklahoman is hosting free water taxi rides Thursdays - Sundays from 6 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. through Christmas Day. A cruise down the canal is the perfect way to enjoy OneMain Financial's Bricktown Canal Lights and view the great shopping and dining options Bricktown has to offer. OG&E transform Myriad Gardens into a winter wonderland OG&E has transformed the Myriad Gardens into a winter wonderland for Downtown in December, presented by Devon. OG&E's garden lights add to the festive atmosphere for visitors seeking to enjoy the new landscaping, architecture and water features in downtown OKC's central park. Guests are also invited to enjoy OG&E's Free Crystal Bridge Sundays. Admission is free each Sunday from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. through New Year's Day (including Christmas). What a great way to entertain holiday guests and show off what our great city has to offer!
OneMain Financial brings holiday cheer to BricktownThrough Jan. 1, the OneMain Financial Bricktown Canal Lights will add to the festive atmosphere as you enjoy Oklahoma City's premiere entertainment distrcit. “We are thrilled to be involved in this year’s Downtown in December events," said Oklahoma-native and OneMain Financial area director Dolan Pederson. "Coming to see the Bricktown Canal Lights is a classic holiday experience, and we are glad to help carry on this Oklahoma tradition.” Enjoy the lights as you stroll down the canal or take a free water taxi ride courtesy of the Oklahoman. Automobile Alley Lights: a downtown holiday favorite The Automobile Alley Lights on Broadway are back for the 10th annual Downtown in December, presented by Devon, and this year, they're better than ever. Visitors will see the historic buildings of Automobile Alley in a whole new light as more than 130,000 colorful LED lights create curtains of light on Broadway between 4th and 10th streets. The Automobile Alley Lights on Broadway is a free attraction and they'll remain on display from dusk to dawn through Jan. 1.
The Skirvin hosts festive holiday celebrations Holiday traditions are in full swing at the Skirvin Hilton in Downtown OKC. Breakfast with Santa has already sold out for Dec. 10 so you're encouraged to book now for Dec. 17. The cost is $24.95 for adults and $15.95 for children. Another delightful Skirvin tradition is High Tea in December. It provides a fun way for families to reunite while enjoying some of the finest teas and food in the city. High Tea in December takes place Thursdays through Sundays through the 17th (the 17th already sold out!) so book your reservation today. The cost is $17.95 per person. And as a final Skirvin Centennial celebration, Christmas Brunch Buffet will be offered on Christmas day from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. for $49.95 for adults and $25.95 for children. Welcome the new year at Opening Night During the last hours of 2011, thousands of Opening Night revelers will gather in the Myriad Botanical Gardens to welcome the New Year. OK CityScape recreates OKC skyline with LEGOS Come get a bird’s eye view of downtown Oklahoma City at the 10th annual Downtown in December, presented by Devon Energy. For the second time, OK CityScape will add to the flavor and fun with an exhibit of downtown’s buildings and attractions built with over 2 million LEGO bricks. OK CityScape is now bigger than ever. This year’s exhibit theme, “Ultra Galactic Megafantastic” features out-of-this-world additions like lasers, spaceships, aliens and much more. Of course, everything ties into the wonderful recreations of the Oklahoma City skyline all made from toy bricks. “OK Cityscape is a unique model we like to call venture philanthropy. With the help of underwriters, sponsors and donors, we have been able to build an interactive exhibit that is open to the public each holiday season and serves as a perpetual funding source for OKC Educare,” said Rachel Hernandez, President. “This year’s exhibit features the newly remodeled Myriad Botanical Gardens and INTEGRIS Baptist Hospital. We have made additions to the Devon Tower, added a flying UFO and a trackless car system.” Located on Automobile Alley at 1100 N. Broadway Ave. OK CityScape runs from Nov. 19 – Dec. 31. (Monday through Saturday - 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays - 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 4-12 and children under 3 get in free. Proceeds from this event benefit Oklahoma City Educare, which promotes school readiness by implementing proven programming aimed at preventing the achievement gap from taking root in young children. OKC hosts Ramada All-College Basketball Classic The 76th Ramada All-College Basketball Classic will be held Saturday, Dec. 17 at the newly-renovated Chesapeake Energy Arena. The doubleheader will feature Oklahoma against Houston and Oklahoma State vs. New Mexico. The classic will be accompanied by the return of the Kid's Basketball Adventure, which will take place in the Cox Business Service Convention Center on Dec. 18. This is a free, interactive basketball family festival that will include food, entertainment, basketball clinics and more. Underground closure updateDue to construction and safety reasons, a portion of the Underground will be closed off beginning Dec. 19 through the end of construction, which is to be determined. The area to be closed is the "Light" gallery between the purple "Invited Artists" and yellow "Oil Exploration History" galleries. You can bypass the closed area by using alternative access points and skywalks indicated on the Underground map. Thanks for your patience!
