Don't let debt be an unwelcome gift

Make sure your debt is manageable this festive season.

We all know Christmas is a time of spending, but there is no need to let it get out of hand. We have a few tips to help keep you in the black this Christmas.

  1. Credit Cards: This is often the time of year where people dust off their credit cards and start to spend up big on presents. The important thing to remember is that your card still needs to be paid off. If you're planning on paying the minimum amount due, be mindful of the interest rate that applies.
  2. Loan repayments: Make sure you prioritise your loan repayments according to what is due first, as well as which has the highest interest rate. Where possible make sure you are paying as much as you can off your higher interest rate loans (like your credit card) while still meeting the repayments on your other loans.
  3. Plan ahead: Reduce the likelihood of over spending next Christmas by opening a Christmas saver account. This encourages you to deposit money on a regular basis, which you can then access from November 1 through until the end of December, in time for the festive season.

Make sure your online shopping is secure

Online shopping is an easy, convenient and often cost-effective way to shop.

However, it's important to be aware of the risks and to take steps to safeguard your personal and financial information to prevent fraud.

Taking basic precautions to protect your personal information through the use of reputable anti-virus products, updating your computer's operating system and not clicking on links contained in unsolicited emails will reduce the chance of your information being compromised.

The Stay Smart Online website is committed to helping inform Australians on how to maximise the benefits of online shopping and minimise the risks and include easy to follow tips, to ensure your shopping experience is memorable for all the right reasons.
