Hi Brewmaster,

Saw the note in your email about cask ales -- please consider this another vote in support. I'm there probably too much already, but there's nothing like a nice, warmish pint in the winter (or summer, come to think of it).

Another question for the brewmaster -- have you guys ever looked into distilling? With your mashing skills, I would think there might be some overlap/interest.

Also, and maybe I should take this question directly to the bar itself, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on Buckbean and why they had to shut down. A sad day for Reno.

Thanks for great beer, good fun, and for being an awesome place in Reno I can bring all my friends when they visit.

Best regards,

Ted -- I thought I had quenched my thirst after downing an outlaw oatmeal stout, but then you reminded me about cask ales. We really need to get rolling on the cask program. We have empty firkins sitting there taking up space and need to get them filled & conditioned ASAP!! It really should be a crime.

As you know, we always love to experiment and try new things; distilling is a new adventure. It does appear that we might be able to distill some Icky with some federal licensing. Distilling is not a difficult process. The difficult part is imparting flavors after the alcohol is concentrated. Distilled beer has a faint hop character, but most of the flavor and aroma components have been left behind. Distinctive flavors are accomplished by storing it in a barrel for extended time or adding herbs or other flavorings such as using juniper berries in gin which means some won't be ready for consumption for years! That makes me thirsty.

The Buckbean guys are friends of Great Basin and we were very sad to hear that their brew kettle lies idle.

Cheers,

Tom Young
