Dear Regent families,

STUDENT FREE DAY - Reminder. TOMORROW, Friday 28th October. The College is closed tomorrow for all classes as staff participate in a day of professional learning with a focus on Mathematics. The College apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you to families for the superb turnout at the recent Exhibition of Learning. The College considers the event a great success; we do hope and trust families enjoyed the various aspects to the evening. The plan is to include some photos of the evening on the College website within the next few days.

Also, a note about Halloween, which occurs on Monday 31st October. Essentially, we don't support the celebration of Halloween. Australian children are now exposed to a high degree of Halloween based content on TV and movies; however you'll notice that we won't highlight it, or focus on it at school and at times will actively discourage discussions about Halloween.

This is because:

  • Halloween involves scary, threatening and dark characters and themes
  • We are a Christian school and The Bible says we should be enlightened by the truth of God's Word - not superstitious beliefs
  • Cautionary wisdom would suggest that possible threats associated with Halloween include social problems - pranksters, vandals and unsupervised children.

Yours sincerely,

Derek Nicholls.

Principal

The College will soon commence enrolment interviews for Kindergarten 2018. Current families with children due to begin Kindergarten in 2018, you are encouraged to inform the College Administration as soon as possible. (Please don't assume we know you have a child due to start in Kindergarten soon).

I WONDER HOW?

The students in Kindergarten 1 have been spending a lot of time over the last few weeks designing and building catapults and ramps. The question on everyone’s mind is “I wonder how…?” There is no limit to the discoveries we can make and the problems we can solve, when we put our minds and hands together.

IT'S A BUG'S LIFE

The Pre-primary students have enjoyed exploring our new topic for this term ‘A Bugs Life’. We had fun going on a nature hunt looking for bugs and different types of insects. We also engaged in many different learning activities related to bugs and have been practising writing and making different stories about bugs. So far we have learnt about ants and spiders! Our adventure today (Thursday) includes a bug hunt excursion along the Swan River.

LOTS OF LEARNING!

This term the year 1 students are Weather Watchers! Each morning, afternoon and evening we go outside, observe the weather and draw what we can see in the sky. We read and record the temperature and rainfall, and then complete a forecast prediction for the following day. On Wednesday, it seemed like we had all four seasons in just one day!

In Mathematics we have been learning about measurement. We measured and compared the length of different objects and learnt what 'uniform informal units' means: uniform means the same, and informal units includes things like popsticks, pegs, paperclips, mugs... we learnt that they would not use these informal units on a building site! We also explored capacity using the water trolley. We had to measure and order the containers from the least to greatest capacity.

At the exhibition of learning, we sold brigadeiros (a small chocolate sweet from Brazil) to raise money for PMH. We carefully counted the donations and found out that we raised $45.60! If you would like to add some of your extra change to this donation, please see Mrs Baird in the College Administration.

WE'VE GOT WORMS!

It's true; we've got worms, and plenty of them! It just so happens (thankfully) that they are mealworms.

Currently in Year 2 Science we are growing mealworms and carefully observing and mapping their life cycle.

As part of our investigation we had to:

Place small mealworms in a container; add oats for them to eat and add small pieces of carrot for moisture. Each week we are making observations and recording what we notice.

It's loads of wriggly fun!

Q. WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

We started Term Four by asking the question,“Why did the Chicken cross the road?” as the springboard for our topic, Immigration. Some interesting answers were; “Because it wanted to go on a roller coaster”, “To go to KFC”, “Because it got chased by a crocodile”. We are looking forward to learning about why people choose to immigrate to Australia. Parents, grandparents and other visitors will be coming into the classroom to share their stories.

The Poet’s Voice is a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves through the medium of poetry. Students are encouraged to write about familiar topics and everyday experiences. Jessica F was inspired to write a poem titled “Holding Neptune”.

LATELY, IN YEAR 3...

In Science, we were conducting experiments to see how we generate heat when we rub our hands together, on a carpet and under running water.

In Mathematics we have been trading ones for tens and tens for hundreds.   We threw the dice and kept a record of our answers and traded as the game progressed.

IT STARTED WITH A BANG!

The Exhibition of Learning certainly was a fabulous way to start Term 4 with a big bang! Year 4’s have continued the theme of percussion with the invention of some instruments from recycled materials.  We are now working towards an assembly performance in Week 6 and final assessments with our own percussion arrangements in Music.  Through our Term 4 theme, The Environment Sustains Life, we will be looking at concepts of sustainability, animal life cycles, food chains and how the actions of humans affect these.  This week we researched recyclable seedling containers and wrote a description and procedure using the Pic Collage app on our iPads.  In Art (later this term) we will explore patterns in our surroundings by taking macro photographs of natural and built environments.  Snr Kerrigan will meet us in the city at Elizabeth Quay in Week 4 so we can use our Italian language skills to order some gelato.  We will also explore the quay for some patterns to photograph.  With the help of the college’s new iScopes we also hope to find some amazing tiny patterns in nature.  We look forward to sharing some of our photographs with you in future newsletters.

BOUNCE DOWN

The Year 5s were working hard and having fun while the 6s were on camp! They have been completing their own science investigations to determine which ball will bounce the highest; making sure to keep as many variables the same to get accurate results.
