SSCCC Caucus Activation

Caucus Reactivation and Interest Form
Andrew Nickens, VP of Legislative Affairs
Toni Schiffmaier, VP of Finance

SSCCC Caucuses are informal bodies created to facilitate dialogue and action around an issue of shared importance to caucus members. Caucus membership is open to all California Community College students, and you can be a member of multiple caucuses.

SSCCC also relies upon caucuses to provide input and recommendations. The SSCCC currently recognizes a number of caucuses including the Student Trustee Caucus, Women Caucus, the Black Caucus, and the Abled Caucus. Joining a caucus is a great way to accomplish important work and network with other student leaders. It is an enriching experience allowing students to discuss statewide issues and collaborate with local colleges to increase student engagement.

With the start of the new year, the SSCCC is looking to gauge students’ interest in inactive caucuses to determine which ones should be renewed for the upcoming term. If you have participated in a caucus in the past or are interested in joining one, please fill out this survey. Data collected from this survey will be used to determine which caucuses will be reactivated for the upcoming year. Thank you for participating.

Election Day is November 3rd--Are you registered to vote?
Tariq Azim, VP of Regional Affairs

Our everyday lives -- as individuals and as students -- are impacted by decisions our elected officials make. This year, more than ever in history, our voice will be critical in making change both locally and nationally. As students of the largest system of higher education in the United States, a high voter turnout sends the message that we are a population that cannot be ignored!

Besides elected offices, Californians will be able to vote for 12 propositions (constitutional amendments) to reform civil rights, tax, and crime. Earlier this year, the SSCCC Board of Directors voted to support what is now Proposition 16, a repeal of the 1996 Proposition 209 which banned affirmative action in our state.

In California, all registered voters will receive a mail-in ballot. To check your registration status and to register to vote please visit registertovote.ca.gov. Remember that your vote plays a crucial role in our democratic process. The power to change your community is in your hands.

Volunteer Opportunity

System-wide Participatory Committees
Vice President Katherine Squire

In the California Community College system, policy conversations begin in a committee. Most of these participatory governance committees consist of representatives from different constituent groups on community colleges such as administrators, faculty, classified staff, and students. In a normal year, it is important to have students at the table. However, with the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, it is more important than ever that we ensure our students continue to remain represented and able to utilize their voices.

Now is your opportunity to serve! We have more than 25 participatory committees for 2020-2021. These committees are open to all community college students across California and cover a range of topics such as equity to more specific student populations like incarcerated students, veterans, and foster youth, as well as areas on curriculum or distance education. To apply for an external committee, please visit the SSCCC website "Serving at the State Level" page to learn about the appointment process and to access the application.  You will be contacted for further information if you are the best fit for the committee.

General Assembly 2021

The SSCCC 2021 General Assembly will be held next year on March 24 - 27, 2021, in Long Beach at the Westin Hotel.  Watch for more information later this year.
