KINDERGARTEN SCHEDULE TERM 3 (WEEK 1 + 2) KINDERGARTEN 1 & 2 During this term, both Kindergarten 1 & 2 have been exploring patterns with Miss Lalley (student teacher). We explored how we can make patterns by using our bodies to clap, stomp and jump. We looked at how patterns can be found in animal skins, buildings and even in nature! The children discovered that they can create patterns with a large variety of things, including shapes, different types of lines, numbers, letters and any classroom objects! We have been practising repeating patterns and have enjoyed creating our own! Throughout Term Two, the students have been learning about animals! After looking at some amazing animals, we decided to design our own! The students used newspaper and watercolour paints to create their own amazing animal. The inspiration to use the newspaper came after Miss Lalley read us the story “Beautiful Oops” by Barney Saltzberg, a story that shows us how to turn our scraps of paper into beautiful works of art! This ties in with our whole school focus of sustainability. Mrs Huxley KINDERGARTEN 3 Wow, what a busy and exciting Term 2 we have had! We enjoyed our Amazing Animals theme and did so many exciting activities. During our excursion to the zoo, we all got to choose a postcard to send to someone special. We loved walking up to the post-box to send the card! In Mathematics we have been exploring Measurement. We had a go at measuring each other and even some of the teachers in the school. We then made a very special measurement garden. We also explored patterning, we used lots of different materials to make different patterns. Mrs Stein PRE-PRIMARY 1+2 This term we have been learning about bugs. We started with an excursion to the Swan River where we searched for and recorded how many bugs we could find. More recently, we learnt about the features of insects. In Design Technologies, we planned and made our own three-dimensional bugs. We have also explored the beautiful patterns of bugs in Mathematics and Art; some of us made beehives using pattern blocks and some of us made pattern collages. It was a lot of fun when we cooked 'dirt desserts' with gummy worms and made spiders using crackers, pretzels and cream cheese! We even learnt the life cycle of a butterfly using mini marshmallows for the eggs, gummy worms for the caterpillar, chocolate coated sultanas for the cocoon, and pretzels for the butterfly. Yum! Miss Shaw and Miss Baker CLASS 1.1 This term in 1.1 we have enjoyed learning about the needs of living things in Science, which we then applied in Design Technologies when we created our own farms. In Mathematics, we explored strategies for addition and subtraction, and then learnt about 2D shapes and 3D objects, which included making our own 3D object out of collage materials. It was a challenge working out how to get them to stay standing! We investigated how to create different textures in art, using materials like salt, oats and flour. We learned that these textures can be used in artwork to make it more interesting. As we near the end of the term, we are looking forward to finishing our stories which we are publishing to make our very own books! Miss Masters CLASS 1/2 As the term comes to an end, Year 1/2 would like to show you some photos from our Science and History lessons. In Science, we made balloon rockets and tested to see if the type of string effected the time it takes for the balloon to travel 1m. On another day, we used our shape knowledge to see which shape (cylinder, rectangular prism or triangular prism) would hold the most books. After writing our predictions, we recorded how many books each shape held. The cylinder was the winner with 50 books! This is because it has no solid edges (folds). We also learnt how to use a typewriter and built a class museum in History. Miss Jongeling CLASS 2.1 Sea Shepherd Incursion We had some volunteers from Sea Shepherd visit our class and spoke of the effects of plastic litter on marine life. We learnt that plastic pollution is called marine debris. We viewed a video called ‘The Scariest Monster in our Seas’, which is plastic! We learnt that 80,000,000 plastic bags are floating in our ocean including 5.5 trillion pieces of plastic. We looked at a photo displaying 275 small pieces of plastic which was sadly retrieved from inside an albatross’ stomach. We saw different kinds of plastic that was collected from a beach, even a plastic water bottle and a thong that had been nibbled by fish. We also learnt that plastic is made from oil; we saw a jar filled with tiny black nurdles which is a raw form of plastic. Lucinda was excited to discover that her watch was made from nurdles. We discussed how we can reduce plastic use. In our class, some students are using metal straws instead of plastic. One parent has sewed her own shopping bag using material. All of us are using reusable water bottles and a few parents are using refillable coffee mugs. You can join Sea Shepherd for a plastic free July beach clean-up at Cottesloe Beach, 9th July from 9-11.30 am. BYO gloves, be sun smart and wear enclosed shoes. Mrs Jenkins CLASS 3.1 Year 3.1 have been busy working on some Maths activities where we were required to use our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division knowledge. In one such activity we started with one number sentence that we knew the answer to and explained all the other number facts we can also know using the same numbers. In another investigation we had a photo of several coins. We worked in pairs and chose the coin we wanted to imagine were in the stacks. Then we used our counting and calculating skills to work out how much money there would be in total. How about you try by pretending they are 20c coins? (Hint: There are 90 coins altogether.) On the 18th of May, Mr and Mrs Lowe from Manna visited us to explain how they began helping poor people in Perth 21 years ago. The Year 3’s have joined Manna in one of their charity efforts. They are helping to clothe poor school children in warm jackets and winter uniforms by collecting donations from students at Regent College. You may continue to make donations, if you haven’t already, by giving your gold coin to Mrs Johnston. Thank you to everyone who has already given generously. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis CLASS 4.1 Earlier this term we went on an excursion to the State Library. We were assisted by some of our parents and caught the bus into the city. We love using our Smartrider cards! At the State Library we were read a story about a ship wreck on the West Australian coast and were then given iPads to research information about the shipwreck to see if the information was from a primary source or a secondary source. This photo shows some of our classmates in the section of the library that looked like a ship's cabin. In Mathematics, we have been learning about Measurement. We have measured various objects around the school to see their length, width or diameter. Here some of our classmates were timing each other to see how long various activities took and we were amazed to see how quickly time flies when you're having fun! With the cold winter on our doorstep, our class decided that we would like to help people less fortunate than ourselves. We have asked the rest of the school to support our drive (read HERE) to make woollen blankets by knitting or crocheting squares to make cosy blankets for the homeless. Here are some our keen knitters practising their skills! Please join us in knitting or crocheting a 'care square' to make blankets. Mrs Innes
CLASS 5/6 This term the Year five and six class had a visit from the worm farm. The students enjoyed observing the worms and holding them, whilst they wriggled around on their palm. The students learnt about the importance of worms in our garden and they made their own worm farm with a plastic bottle and newspaper, to take home. In River Rangers we have been growing herbs and vegetables. We picked some of the herbs from our garden beds and made pumpkin soup. It was a very tasty experience! Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Over the past few weeks Years 1-6 have been learning tennis during their sport time. The students have learnt forehand, backhand and volley shot. The new tennis equipment has been very beneficial as it allows each student to be paired together and enjoy a game of tennis with the aim to have a rally with their partner. On Friday the 26th May the Netball girls went and played in the WACSSA primary netball carnival. Both teams showed great skills and teamwork with one of our teams winning the year 6 Division C competition. Well done girls this was a huge improvement from last years carnival. On Friday the 9th June, the soccer team played in the WACSSA Primary Soccer Carnival, the boys played extremely well and won the C division competition. Fantastic result and thank you to Mr Pearson for being our referee, and Miss Masters for her outstanding coaching skills. Mrs French MUSIC Performing Arts Festival - Thank you to Students Thank you to all the students from Year 2- 6 who were involved in the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival last week, at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Thank you (students) for your commitment and dedication to rehearsals, for working hard to learn all your words and choreography, and for your enthusiasm and confidence to perform in front of such a large audience. It was a wonderful opportunity for Regent students to present a snapshot of the learning that takes place within the discipline of Performing Arts. I’m confident that it was a very positive learning experience for all involved. Looking forward to the next one. Mrs Rebekah Marshall Year 5 Students have been learning about the purpose of music in society, in particular, music for performing such as ballet, and orchestral music and music for social dance. They recently enjoyed learning a traditional folk dance from Germany called ‘The Dance of the Blacksmith'. Students were challenged to attempt the dance in a round within a group of 4 students, which was no easy task, but everyone had a go and it was lots of fun. Opposite (above) is a photograph of students enjoying the laughs that accompany the funny dance steps of the ‘Dance of the Blacksmith’. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES The Years 2's recently revisited coding with"The Foo"; an app which as multiple different worlds for the students to explore. This is a wonderful app that turns coding into fun and gives the students an insight into what's involved in creating video games. The Year 3's have just completed their Budd:e; a robot that they built with their cyber safety knowledge. Budd:e is part of the broader Australian Government cybersecurity initiative, aimed at creating a safer, more secure online environment for all Australian children. CODEBUGS The Year 6’s have begun a new coding unit using CodeBugs. These are very new and exciting; combining block based programming with electronics. The result is a cute, wearable device that has touch sensitive inputs and can be powered with a watch battery! Here the students have created a programme to detect if a circuit is made complete. The LED output displays the confirmation of the touch sensor of two inputs. Mrs Saxton OUTBACK BOSHACK Early in Term 2, the Year 4.1 class headed off North of Toodyay for a fun-filled 'glamping' style adventure at Boshack Outback. Three days and two nights of being outdoors were enjoyed by both students and staff. The camp theme of Respect and Sustainability were expertly threaded into all aspects of the camp. Thank you to Mrs Innes, Mrs Johnston and Mr Wickham who attended and participated in all aspects of the camp. Thank you to independent adjudicators Mr Vaughan McCue and Miss Denise Rhodes. TEDdy TALKS 2017 Each of the students opposite participated in grand final presentations of the Regent College 2017 TEDdy Talks. Medallions and trophies will be presented early next term. Congratulations to all students from Year 1-6 for their participation in the annual TEDdy Talk program. PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL @ Perth Convention Centre The College would like to congratulate students for their performance and acknowledge their significant efforts in preparing for this combined, independent school event. Of course, a special thank you to Mrs Rebekah Marshall, for her expertise in selecting the material and directing the many rehearsals. Thank you, also, to Miss Lauren Shaw for her support in preparing some of the dance moves/routines. As a Christian school, it was a delight to be able to perform the item, "Live like your loved" - a contemporary Christian song that encourages each of us to have confidence to be who God has designed us to be. |
