KindergartenWhat a wonderful year it has been. I would like to thank the lovely parent representatives, Mrs Angel Cooper and Mrs Liz Vayler who have contributed to the Kindergarten social calendar and supported families throughout the year. We wish families a meaningful Christmas and a blessed New Year! Mrs Huxley Kindergarten The end of Kindergarten has arrived so quickly and we are very eager and ready to be “big” children in Pre-Primary. This week we visited with the Pre-Primary teachers and we had the opportunity to see what happens in those classrooms. We did praise and worship, had some mat time with Miss Baker and Miss Shaw, and had the chance to do art and played in the Pre-Primary learning areas. We all had so much fun! We have been chatting about what our favourite part of Kindergarten has been and this is what the Kindy 3 children have said: Aarav – playing with Charlie A big “THANK YOU!” goes to our parent representative, Caroline Ashely, for all the work she has done for us this year. Thank you for communicating with both the parents and staff about what’s happening in our class, for organising social events, welcoming the new parents and children and helping everyone feel included and connected. We appreciate you! Mrs Funk Pre-PrimaryThe year is nearly coming to an end, and to celebrate this and Christmas, the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary student presented their Christmas concert to parents and families. All the students did a wonderful job, singing and dancing. Thank you to all the parents for a wonderful year! We look forward to seeing you next year! Have a very Happy Christmas! A sincere thank you to the Pre-primary parent representatives for this year, Amanda Mills-Ghani and Felicity Perrot. Miss Shaw and Miss Baker Year One What a busy time we have had during these last few weeks of Year 1! The students have been building up their anticipation towards Christmas with a range of activities, including writing stories and acrostic poems, creating funky reindeer, building nativity puppet scenes and much more! In Mathematics, we have been revising in preparation for Year 2. We have revisited counting, addition and subtraction. The students have investigated how many answers they could find to open-ended maths problems. We have even revised sharing and begun to learn division with much success! Thank you to all the students for your effort and enthusiasm this year. A big thank you to all the parents as well, especially our parent helpers throughout the year and our parent rep., Tanya Thum. We couldn’t have done it without you! Miss Masters Year One / TwoYear 1/2 were recently the proud hosts for some of the 2018 Year 1 students. They excitedly buddied up to show the layout of the classroom and a tour of the school grounds. Afterwards we returned to class for question and answer time. The Year 1/2 students shared their knowledge and experiences of Year 1. Miss Jongeling demonstrated how to rule up using Year 1 paper and they began brainstorming writing ideas. Some of them wrote about visiting Year 1 and how exciting it will be to meet their new teacher. The Year 1/2's were amazing role models for the current Pre-Primary students and demonstrated how much they have matured over the year. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the students in Year 1/2 this year and wish them all the best as they continue their schooling at Regent College. I would also like to thank our class parent rep., and broader College rep coordinator, Allison Slater. I hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas. Miss Jongeling Year Two The Year 2.1 class recently went for a Heritage walk around our local area. We visited the Victoria Park Windmill and Victoria Park Wishing Well. We sat on the green grass and drew a portrait of the structures. Next we walked along Albany Highway and stopped at Victoria Park Primary School. We spoke to a teacher through the fence and she told us the school was built in 1894. When we returned to school, we used calculators to work out how old Victoria Park Primary School, the windmill and wishing well were. Heritage Day Science I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who have helped throughout the year. Day Camp, Father’s Day cooking, making scones, sewing, listening to the students read, helping them with their work, incursions and excursions. It has been a productive and enjoyable year and your involvement has been greatly appreciated! Thank you also to our parent rep., Paula Hadfield. Mrs Jenkins Year ThreeThe Year 3’s have had an art filled last few weeks with many creative activities. One such artwork was a symmetrical drawing of our own face. We learned a new technique and surprised ourselves with the outcome. We have also been cutting shadow pictures from black card and molding craft clay into figures to depict the story of Jesus’ birth. Thank you to our class rep., Caroline Elieff, parent helpers, Harjati Shaddick and Elicia Sotingco, and 2017 excursion volunteers. 'It takes a village to raise a child' and we are so very humbled to be part of our supportive Year 3 village. Thank you for all your support throughout the year. We wish all our students and their families God’s richest blessings at Christmas and throughout 2018. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Ellis Year Three. Nativity AssemblyLast week the Year 3 class coordinated the final College assembly for 2017, with a special Nativity focus. The College choir supported the carols and some of the staff assisted with instrumental support.A very big thank you to Mrs Pamela Ellis, Mrs Rebekah Lane and staff band for coordinating the occasion. Mrs Johnston Year FourWe are truly in the festive spirit and have made some amazing table decorations and some tasty treats to welcome the festive season! Each group was given a recipe to follow and the results, as can be seen from the pictures, were amazing! We have also created a recipe book, so parents, sit back and enjoy Christmas, as your child is more than capable of setting the table, making table decorations and place settings, and feeding any hungry friends who come over! We, as a class, are sad to say goodbye to Ishaan, Jessica, Ben and Mollie who are leaving Regent. May you all be blessed with great new friends at your new schools (some overseas!). Special thanks to our class rep., Mrs Jeannie Phillips, who fulfills this role with a smile and great energy! We would also like to thank all the Canteen Mums who make Fridays such a special day for us at school! Mrs Innes Congratulations! Congratulations to our Year 4s for placing second fastest in WA Year Five / SixThis term we have learnt about Pop Art. We studied the artist Andy Warhol who was a leading figure in this visual art movement. Over the year we have created many wonderful pieces of art work, and a lot of Art Oscars were awarded. We farewell the graduating Year Sixes this term. They have had many exciting learning opportunities over their years at Regent College and we will be sad to see them go. The Year five and six class would like to thank the parent representatives of our class, Ruth Kinney and Vanessa Walton for their hard work over the year. It has been an exciting year in five and six, and the students have had many wonderful experiences. Mrs Lotsos and Mrs Wilkinson Congratulations! Congratulations to our Year 5s and 6s for placing fifth fastest in WA Digital TechnologiesThis term the Year 1’s and 2’s have been learning a new visual programming language ScratchJr. This is an iPad application which allows young students to create, rather than simply consumers of technology. With a handful of basic skills, the students can create reasonably complex stories to describe a learned concept. The students have been able to develop a four part story about the weather including animation and voice recordings and have not been restricted by their written language skills. Mrs Saxton Languages. ItalianThe Year 6's were fortunate to do some Italian cooking as part of their 'Il Ristorante Italiano' (the Italian Restaurant) theme this term. They made the famous and popular dessert 'Tiramisu', and the next day they served it to the Year 5's. There was a clear majority of approval from the class and maybe some Year six families may be getting a treat this Christmas. Signora Kerrigan MusicTowards the end of the term in music, students spend their time rehearsing for upcoming concerts and performances. They polish their actions, practice projecting their voices and singing with clear diction. The Pre-Primary students are pictured (in red uniforms) rehearsing for their upcoming ELC Christmas presentation. Year 2.1 Students performed their colonial style dances and hand clapping games for the Year 1/2 class last week. The Year 4.1 class spent the last few weeks exploring the sounds of their voice to make mouth music. Working in small groups, they wrote their own verses and created vocal sound effects working within the structure of a song called ‘The Sound of Your Voice’. Students performed for each other and enjoyed a few laughs at their peers’ silly sounds and actions The Drum Circle series 2 that ran for the first half of Term 4 was a success and students gained experience playing percussion as a large group and breaking off into smaller groups. Pictured, students can be seen working on an arrangement composition task based on speech rhymes. Mrs Marshall Physical EducationOn Monday 27 November the Year 4 and Year 5/6 classes participated in a tennis clinic and had a class photo with the Hopman Cup trophy. Coaches Brett and Paul from Tennis Australia ran a session, which included footwork, forehand single matches and then finished with a mix doubles tournament. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and seeing the trophy was a highlight for many of them. Running Club Update If your child/children received a Regent Running Club singlet could you please wash and hand back to the office. Thank you. Mrs French Regent at the Movies On the evening of Wednesday 21 November, approximately 175 students and parents attended a private, pre-release screening of 'The Star', at Hoyts Carousel. The movie is an animated re-telling of the first Christmas, suitable for the whole family. The College would like to thank Christian Schools Australia (CSA) and College P&F for supporting the event. After School CareDuring Term 4 After School Care students were treated to a visit from the Kensington Fire Brigade! Two fire trucks arrived and we got to see inside, while the firefighters showed us all their equipment! We even got to pretend we were firefighters and took turns spraying water from the fire hose! We learnt about all the things firefighters do in addition to fighting fires, such as saving animals and rescuing people. We were surprised at how busy they are and how many fires they fight every day! We are proud of our community’s heroes. Mrs Wyatt 2018 Orientation. KindergartenLast week we welcomed our 2018 children into Kindergarten. Families came along and enjoyed a morning of socialisation, play and connection. The children had opportunity to meet their teachers and other children that will be in their class in 2018. Many of them not wanting to leave at the end of the session and excited about the new experiences next year will bring.Reports and Placements. 2018The final day of school for Regent College students is this Friday 8th December. Students in Years Kindergarten to Year 5 will receive their Semester 2 Report and also their class placement information for 2018; that is, who they will have as their teacher. Full class lists will be made posted at school on Monday 29th January 2018 from 12 midday. Students can respond quite differently when learning who their next teacher will be, or what friends will/will not be in their future class. Some students feel excited, some nervous and some seemingly indifferent. Most importantly, it is essential that students see their parents responding positively. On the whole, children actually adapt very well to change, as long as they receive the right emotional support. If a child is somewhat anxious about the next school year, without talking about it too much, mums and dads can speak positively about the terrific new opportunities for learning and friendship. It is healthy for children to try new combinations of friendship from year to year. Even as adults, we can feel a bit nervous starting or trying new things - we've just learnt how to work through our emotions. We can be great supporters for our children as they too learn this important life skill. Teachers and schools invest significant effort into class placements for students. There is a combination of factors, including the intended balance of gender, friendship, social skills, achievement and student needs. Please plan to support the final decision of the College, trusting that our intention is, what is in the best interest of your child. Thank you Telstra & Regent dads. The College would like to thank Telstra and Mr Clune and Mr Cooper (Regent dads) who recently assisted Regent College in submitting a successful application for a Telstra Kids Grant. Group therapyGroup Therapy with Heather Yeoman 2018One of the privileges of being involved at Regent College is working in close partnerships with the teaching staff. This close relationship means that the benefits of therapy can be extended into the classroom through close communication with your child’s teacher. Starting in Term 1, I will be running some group therapy for children who have mild to moderate difficulty in key learning areas. These groups are designed to assist children to strengthen skills in key areas, develop new skills that are necessary for their learning and to assist children who are currently lagging behind in key learning areas. Two groups will be run and children have the option of being involved in both; Literacy Development and Pre Literacy Skills Group, and Oral Narrative/Comprehension Group. Group Information:
