Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Wow, what a weekend that was:  the Parade, the Fourth of July lunch, fireworks and the WestPoint Regatta.    I confess it is truly humbling to think that somewhere around 25 percent of our membership answered the call and helped out during the weekend – a 3 day holiday in the middle of summer.    And some folks worked all three days.  Our club showed brilliantly and you all deserve our thanks.  But in reflecting on how hard our volunteers worked, something more is clearly in order.

So… Commodores Bumpus, Gilmore and I would like to offer a modest token of our thanks and offer a drink to each of our weekend volunteers.  We are hoping that you will savor each beverage slowly and accept our profound thanks for being the backbone of our dynamic club.   I would like to work it this way:  there will be a sign up sheet by the bar.  Jot your name, your membership number and the cost of your drink down in the appropriate space – and drink up!  You deserve it.

We would like to run this offer through August 8th.  If you are eligible but are out of town, please send me an email and we will credit your account.

Okay, with the Fourth behind us, more fun is in store.

This Friday is a Drop In Dinner and General Meeting.   We will have survey results, new member readings and lots else to discuss.  Our menu for the evening will be:

  • Chicken Enchiladas with sauce
  • Pulled Pork Tacos
  • Homemade Salads – both green and red
  • Rice and Beans
  • Taco Bar with all the fixins.
  • Ice Cream Bar
  • Cost:  $ 15.00

Valet parking dents?  Surly maitre d’s?  Gratuities?  Fuhgeddaboudit!

Next up in our frenzied social scene is another Island/ Delta Time Party on Saturday July 19th.  Join us for music and food and dancing.

On July 25th we have a Drop In Dinner with a special presentation by Chris and Michele Hartman of their recent trip to the Antarctica.  Whoa, we will be sure to serve ice cream that evening.  So… come and enjoy Lina’s cooking and our guests!

My last item this month is the Delta!  Between July 28th and August 1st, we will decamp  from Redwood City for the Delta Yacht Club.  I believe all the boat spots may be taken, but I would strongly encourage those who would like to blacktop up to do so – especially for the Tuesday party.  Please let Rick Gilmore know if you are planning to attend.

Thank you again to our Fourth of July volunteers!  See you around the club.

From Our Commodore: "Amazing Weekend"

Wow! What an amazing weekend at the Club. So many people working hard to support so many great events! Kicking off the 4th of July, Sequoia had a float in the Redwood City parade; the largest 4th of July parade in Northern California. Thousands of people lined the streets and cheered on Sequoia Yacht Club as we were announced a dozen times to cheers from the crowd.  Then, to learn we won first place for floats was just over the top!

During the afternoon and evening hours, we enjoyed camaraderie at the club with not one but two meals, lunch and dinner, followed by one of the best fireworks displays at the Port in many years.

Then Saturday was filled with preparations at the Club to receive 200+ racers for the Westpoint Regatta and Island Time Party with all the preparation and logistics, shuttles, bands and food. It was just amazing to see the dozens of volunteers come together to create such a memorable event.

There are clearly too many people to thank, but I did want to call out our Rear Commodore Rick Gilmore and team for organizing and planning for weeks for the great Westpoint Regatta and Island Time Party – Fabulous. And, our Vice Commodore Dan Lockwood, who does so much for the club, not only his tireless work to make sure everything in the club was in great shape, but led a great team of volunteers to create the award winning  float, making the signage, getting much of the material and storing the float in his facility. The logistics for the Island Time Party was amazing and plus all of the management of the many bars and so much more due to the efforts of Nick Weber. I would also like to call out Kathy Harris our Social Chair for her energy and direction on so many things including the float and the bands and much more, David Jackson who worked all day on the 4th of July to have great food and atmosphere at the club, and  Steve Holmstrom and team for amazing food at the Island Time Party. There are many, many more to thank and it was great team Sequoia effort. Thank you! Thank You!

The Club glowed this past weekend, not only from the decorations and the lighting, but from the heart, soul, welcoming attitude and the great team effort that makes us such a great club.

Social Chair Kathy Thanks Volunteers

Hello Members,

I have to say that the most action packed weekend ever, and the most volunteerism, time and energy I have seen in 20 years at our club was unbelievably amazing…. We Rock.  I am so proud to be your Social Chairperson.

Our Talented Float Team got us First place in Redwood City’s 4th of July Parade…

Thank you:

  • Dan Lockwood and his son Tom
  • Nick and Robin Weber & Friend Rickie
  • Cliff Kramer
  • Don Inouye
  • Wayne Johnson
  • Winston our Pirate
  • Ashley Utz, (my beautiful patient/ mermaid)
  • Coty and Suvan in our El Toro

While the Float Team was downtown Dave Jackson took charge of “4th of July” at our club…a wonderful late lunch and a Pre-Fireworks meal as well!  He helped all weekend as well.

To make us even more amazing, we hosted the Westpoint Regatta/ Island Time Party on July 5th.  Months of meetings and plans…Our club showed racers and guests how great we are here in the South Bay….it is Magical here…as we said at SBOD.

After wonderful food, two fabulous bands and lots of dancing and celebrating after my duties were complete, I can’t believe Larry took a breakfast to Westpoint Harbor for the racers on Sunday.  I will follow up with a list of all the volunteers this past weekend…It’s our club that shined …Not just a few members.

Thank you Sequoia Yacht Club!!!

More Fun to Come,
