Summer 2015

As we approach a new academic year, it's important to reflect on the discoveries and triumphs of the year's final quarter. 

KAUST students gained recognition on the global stage by participating in the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting and by bringing home 2015 IEEE best research paper honors.

Researchers capitalized on the emergence of a chain of new islands in the Red Sea and the Center for Desert Agriculture led the Kingdom in an important global observance. And as another group of staff and faculy members crossed the stage to accept awards for five years of dedicated service, we captured some of their voices in a must-watch video you'll see below.

Tech Tour seeks most promising tech companies in Saudi Arabia, MENA and Europe.

Tech Tour and the International Venture Club have put out an open call to innovative tech companies in the Middle East and international companies ready for expansion in the Middle East. Companies seeking investment for expansion are encouraged to apply to present to top VCs, Corporates and Business Angels at the 2015 Arabian Tech Tour, to be held in Jeddah and Riyadh, November 1-3, 2015.

The KAUST Innovation Fund, formerly known as the Seed Fund, supports the University's pipeline of technology-based startup projects and companies. It also invests in high-profile international technology companies willing to establish their operations in Saudi Arabia and to benefit from synergies with KAUST research activities.

Plate separation births two volcanic islands

Between 2011 and 2013, two volcanic islands, named Sholan and Jadid, appeared in the Zubair archipelago’s mid-ocean ridge system. The eruptions from which they were formed were accompanied by a series of earthquakes, and the seismic and volcanic activity caused visible disturbance to the landscape on neighboring islands.

Global plants day debuts in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia became the first country in the GCC to observe Fascination of Plants Day (FOPD), due to the efforts of the KAUST Center for Desert Agriculture. The global event is an effort led by the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO) to raise awareness about plants and plant science.

The rising costs of natural gases continue to prompt governments and industry to seek lower cost fuel alternatives. General Electric (GE) and KAUST have recently joined forces to explore the feasibility of using crude oil, straight from the ground, to produce energy.
