Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

We had a very big Barth Race weekend last week and I hope you had a chance to come out and enjoy the camaraderie, the racing and the nearly perfect weather.

I want to thank the Coyote Point Yacht Club for their outstanding dinner and dance party last Friday.  They had a delicious menu of roast pork, and it was great to see old friends and make some new ones.  Thank you also to our members who made the trek up to San Mateo to show their support.

Saturday night was another great party – this time at our club.  Many Coyote Point members stayed on our guest dock and attended the Western BBQ Party.  And what a party it was!  Larry and Robin Mayne went above and beyond and put on a terrific feast of beef, corned bread, beans and such.  Kathy Harris and her team provided decorations and arranged for a very good band.  The weather was very pleasant and we did a brisk bar and dinner business that evening.  I also want to mention our OD last Saturday, Alex Eiser.  Not only did he stay all day and well into the evening, he helped out immensely in the galley and even baked several loaves of bread!  Thank you Alex.

Oh, and by the way, we have renewed our lease on the painting for another year at least…

And the Social Team never rests here at Sequoia – so onward we go!

Coming up on Saturday 9/27 is our annual Oktoberfest celebration.  This year it will be hosted by Helen Horn and team.  Come down and enjoy your favorite brew and some sausages and sides.  Watch for the sign up at the club or just come on down!

Wednesday Lunches are up and running thanks to Winston and Carole Bumpus and our next scheduled is on October 1st.

On Saturday, October 4th the Port of Redwood City will be hosting their annual Portfest.  Sequoia has been invited to play an important role in providing beverages for the event.  Our Fourth of July float will also make an appearance.  And we will need volunteers!  So please come on down and lend us an hour or two of your time.  There are sign-up sheets in the club bar.

Beyond that, we have the October 10th General Meeting and Drop In Dinner.

See you around the club.

Sequoia Wins Barth Race!!

Our neighbors to the North, Coyote Point Yacht Club mounted one their best challenges in recent years in an attempt to take our beloved DeWitt print from our dining hall. We had a total of 23 boats on the line with 12 from SYC and 11 from CPYC and ideal conditions for the 13.67nm course starting of CPYC's Z mark and finishing in Redwood Creek off Marker 13.

Top 3 finishers in the Spinnaker division were:

1st Place - L2O - Alex Huang (SYC)
2nd Place - Daredevil - Tim Anto (SYC)
3rd Place - Smokin' J - Mark Bettis (CPYC)

In Non-Spinnaker:

1st Place - Selene - Paul Morgan-Witts (SYC)
2nd Place - Moonstars - Bill Welch (CPYC)
3rd Place - Liquid Kitty - Yvette Yong (CPYC)

In the end, the Sequoia Yacht Club was victorious with a team score of 57 to Coyote Points 76. The Barth trophy (DeWitt print) is ours again for another year!

You can see all the race results by clicking HERE.

Post race festivities were hosted by Larry Mayne & Kathy Harris who put on a western BBQ with all the fixins'.

Special thanks to:

Roger Fabian Pease and his Ranger27 Tug Nano-Tug  for graciously volunteering to be the RC boat at the finish and find time as the official Barth race photographer.

Coastal Cleanup Day Success

For the 4th year in a row Sequoia Yacht Club supported California Coastal Cleanup day. This year we had 38 volunteers at the club, including great help from the Sea Scouts and Mariners.  They were able to pick up nearly 400 lbs of trash and recyclables from just in the area around the Port and docks.

We were also, once again, pleased to have Vivian Matuk, the Environmental Boating Program Coordinator of the California State Parks Division of Boating & Waterways, California Coastal Commission, who helped kick off our event. In addition, we had great support from the San Mateo County Environmental Health Services as well as ReCology that provided a dumpster for a free extra pick up.

This is the 30th Anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day and with 75% of the cleanup sites reporting, the statewide count stands at 54,124 volunteers. Those volunteers picked up 576,571 pounds of trash
and an additional 109,494 pounds of recyclable materials, for a total of 686,065 pounds or 343 tons. Amazing!

Thanks again for all of you who volunteered and gave up your Saturday morning to pitch in to make a difference.

Attention Women Racers: Red Bra Racing!

Ahoy Sequoia Lady Racers,

I wanted to share the announccement of a very special regatta at South Beach Yacht Club scheduled for October 5th, 2014.

"This is the third annual Red Bra Regatta. This is a regatta skippered and crewed by women only in the south portion of San Francisco Bay. This will be a fun event that will allow women to race against each other and enjoy a beautiful venue. No host bar and a BBQ for a nominal fee will be held after the race at South Beach Yacht Club."

They say "south portion of San Francisco Bay" but it's not South Bay! This is a great opportunity to show those "North Bay" ladies how we race south of the Bay Bridge.

Also, check out the photos below from our West Coast Swing Dance classes! Classes are still going on. See the sidebar calendar in this Blast  for the upcoming schedule.
