Words of Hope from Amos Trust

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Words of Hope.

Please scroll down and join us in thanking all the recent Amos Marathon runners, to read about an update from Burundi and to find out about an exciting Amos event in central London in June.

They ran. We cheered.

Poet and Amos supporter Harry Baker

A huge thank you to all the Amos runners who ran in Bethlehem, London, Cape Town, Birmingham and Sheffield in the last 6 weeks.

It started in Bethlehem with 10 runners taking part in the Bethlehem 'Right To Movement' Marathon on Friday 17th March. Then Phill Austen-Reed ran the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in South Africa, closely followed by Kate Thomas taking part in the Sheffield Marathon.

Meanwhile, we have all been following Harry Baker and Mark Rigby who won the opportunity to represent Amos in the London Marathon on Sunday 26th March and finally, having just returned from Nicaragua with Amos, Claire Jackson ran in Birmingham to raise money for the communities she had visited.

These 15 enthusiastic and determined individuals have raised in excess of £16,000 for Amos Palestine, Amos Street Child and Amos Communities. As Claire said after she ran this weekend, "Pain is temporary, but the money I raise will change lives forever". So from everyone at Amos, a huge thank you one and all.

We have two new features on our website – one from Greenbelt Festival Creative Director Paul Northup and one from Cambridge-based illustrator Mark Rigby who ran the Bethlehem and London Marathon's respectively. You can read Paul's Feature here and you can read Mark's here.

And finally, just because it's so good, here's a link to Harry Baker's training film which is still well-worth a look if you haven't seen it before.

Please click on the button below to read more about our Palestine and Street Child work – the reasons why everyone was running. And if you would like to join Team Amos, please contact katie@amostrust.org

An update from Burundi

BURUNDI UPDATE:
After week of violence and unrest.

Tensions came to the surface last week in Burundi with mass protests and demonstrations as the news that President Pierre Nkurunziza had been nominated to stand for a third times by his ruling CNDD-FDD party.

Furious at what they perceived as a breach of the constitution and of the peace accord that ended the 12 year civil war, protesters took to the streets of Bujumbura and clashed with police.

Our partners New Generation Burundi report the situation to be the worst since the revolution ended in 2005 and in what is one of the worlds poorest countries, thousands have fled to neighbouring Rwanda and there is a real concern that intertribal conflict will once again break out as the government cracks down on those who dissent or speak out against the current President.

You can read an article on the Guardian's website that explains things in more detail.
