From the Chair
In this special edition of EV News, I firstly would like to thank all of the enthusiastic members who attended the meeting at WPNEC on November 23. Apart from the opportunity to meet face-to-face with interested members, the AGM was the culmination of what has been a year of highlights, excitement and of course, hard work and dedication by so many. DRESSAGE VICTORIA CHAIR REPORT 2016
This report reviews the Dressage Victoria year 2015/16, recognising our many achievements and flagging the areas of concern. While volunteers provide a hugely important amount of work towards the success of Dressage in Victoria, at the centre of our operations on a daily basis are the EV Staff. I would like to thank Katrina & Iole Brzozek who left EV this year having been great contributors to Dressage over the last few years and welcome Rebecca Willis back to the EV office in the role as Dressage Co-ordinator. Rebecca’s knowledge of the administration of the sport is invaluable. At the centre of all Dressage events are the judges and our Dressage Judges Education Panel has had a very strong year. The relatively new panel led superbly by
Jane Ventura has secured consistent funding from the Dressage Levy and applied it to an increasing range of education activities that is beginning to create more, much needed judges. Management of the many issues around judging can be a challenging task but Jane and her team have administered this area with professionalism. Continue reading the full Dressage Chair Report 2016
EVENTING VICTORIA CHAIR REPORT 2016
In sitting down to write my report I looked back at the goals that we wrote down at our Strategic planning meeting in 2015. Strengthening Relationships with Riders I feel the Committee are very proactive in responding to questions and requests for help from riders. Through squads, email, social media, phone calls and more importantly face to face at events. Open and honest discussion is welcome at all times. We had a request from a lower level rider to trial a grassroots section at our State Championships. It was a huge success and one that we will encourage Organising Committees to consider including in their events for next year. Continue reading the full Eventing Chair Report 2016

Everyone welcome.
SHOW HORSE VICTORIA CHAIR REPORT 2016
Show Horse has seen some very welcomed changes and progressions over the past twelve months. Victoria has led the way in rewriting and ratifying both EA National Show Horse Rules and EA National Measuring Rules making them more clear, consistent and easier to interpret and understand. We have also commenced policy talks with other show horse governing bodies to achieve an outcome that will see these bodies work together on anti-doping and ban adoptions with the overall aim of a fairer, cleaner, better sport for all. These developments are a work in progress but we would like to think that these can be achieved over the next twelve months. Continue reading the full Show Horse Chair Report 2016
SHOW JUMPING VICTORIA CHAIR REPORT 2016
It is with pleasure that I submit my report for showjumping 2015/2016. The highlight of the year for jumping would have to be the Olympics at Rio. The Australian team had Matt Williams and James Paterson-Robinson, plus the reserve Jamie Kermond, all past Vic state squad members. They didn't have the best team result, after they were reduced to only three riders, however both Matt and Edwina made it into the individual finals. Great result, and we should be all very proud of their achievement. Continue reading the full Showjumping Chair Report 2016
Each year two positions for the Board are available with the elected members announced at the AGM. This year, please welcome the following two new Equestrian Victoria Board members:
Andrea Tanner
Andrea has a background in federal politics, state government and consulting. She holds a masters degree in public policy and management, is a rider, coach and inter schools parent. Competing at a high level from an early age, Andrea is now enjoying a return to the sport and watching her children enjoy and compete in equestrian.
Tom Lupton
Our mystery man (we promise there will be a photo soon!) is Tom Lupton. Tom’s family has been involved in Racing and Showjumping at elite level throughout Australia and New Zealand for over 80 years. As the current infrastructure manager for the ASJC, Tom’s extensive experience of providing services to many major events throughout Australia and the world are a much welcomed addition to the depth we have on the EV board.
Victorian Young Rider Dressage Squads and Development Program
Two training weekends have been held in the new Squad year, the first at Werribee Park NEC on 20 – 21 August saw a good number of young dressage riders enjoying great instruction over two days with leading coaches Bjarne Elefsen, Gitte Donvig, Bianca Veneziano, Karen Blythe, Lou d’Elia, Jan Smith and Sue Leslie. Continuing our commitment to personal fitness, all riders also took part in sessions with our trainer Natalia Evertsz and highlight of the weekend was a fascinating talk by Dr Andrew McLean on the Saturday night on animal behaviour and how it can help our training. Squad members were also offered the opportunity to work through their EA Introductory Certificates in Riding and Horse Management. September was the “big wet” month but over sixty squad riders
headed to Boneo Park for a training weekend on the 17 -18 of September which saw them enjoy working with a wide range of coaches including Bjarne Elefsen, Bianca Veneziano, Jodie Barnes, Robyn Brown, Sue Leslie, Viv Axton and Jan Smith. Riders were pushed hard in their personal fitness sessions by Natalia Evertsz and enjoyed information sessions with Antoinette Foster from HiForm. Arena etiquette was covered in a very entertaining sessions with Victorian Dressage Riders’ Representative Sharyn McCombe. Riders also took delivery of their new Squad uniforms. A Protocol Day on Saturday 7 January at Werribee Park NEC will see riders hone their skills for the upcoming Ellanbrae Park Victorian Youth Dressage Championships 13 – 15 January 2017 at Boneo Park. A mid-year Squad review will take place after the Championships and our next two training weekends are scheduled for 11-12 March and 22-23 April. For riders who would be interested in joining Squad mid year, a pro-rata offer will be announced in February. All enquiries about Squad can be directed to the Co-ordinator jancsmith@bigpond.com
The Ellanbrae Park Victorian Youth Dressage Championships

New Date, New Format, New Venue, New Zealand The Ellanbrae Park Victorian Youth Dressage Championships will be held at Boneo Park on 13 - 15 January 2017. For the first time the Championships will cater for riders aged 8 years of age right up to riders aged 25 years in a wide range of tests, from Preliminary to Grand Prix. This is an exciting prospect, especially for riders, who when they turn 21, traditionally would move out of young rider ranks. The Championships will offer a wide range of tests, including entry level tests for riders at Participation level and Interschools. As well, there will be a range of FEI tests, for Ponies, Junior, Young riders, under 25 Grand Prix. The FEI tests are rarely offered in such a wide range in Australia and the
event will be the perfect lead up to the prestigious Boneo Classic (19 - 22 January) where riders can compete in the FEI tests at International level. A wide range of sponsors will ensure that the event is well supported and there will be lots of activities including a free welcome barbeque and dog races on the Friday night, a gala dinner and music on the Saturday night, and a great raffle where winners can choose from a wide range of prizes including a specially commissioned portrait of their horse. Shoppers will be able to enjoy the trade village and the delights of the Mornington Peninsula are just minutes away. An international flavour has been added with the announcement that a team of three riders from New Zealand will
attend the event. They will ride borrowed horses and compete as a team.
The complete revised 1.1. 17 Rulebook with mark-up will soon be available on the EA website.
HELMET RULE CHANGES
The new year is rapidly approaching. Remember that the helmet rules change on the 1/1/2017!
http://www.equestrian.org.au/news/ea-statement-helmet-standard
http://www.equestrian.org.au/news/helmet-regulations-updated Change in Rule for 2017.
In response to a motion from the National Riders Meeting conducted at the Australian Dressage Championship in October, the mandatory safety helmet rule for all riders for all levels has been amended. It now effectively will be as follows:
A safety helmet is mandatory for all riders up to and including Advanced level and for all riders at any level (including EA FEI level ) if you are aged 22 years and under. If aged 22 years and over, at EA FEI level competitions, a rider has the option of wearing either a safety helmet or a top hat.
YELLOW CARD SYSTEM - DRESSAGE
The Yellow Card system ( which is effectively a trial for 2017) has been approved by the EA Board and will be incorporated into the Dressage Rules. The EA office is currently preparing the actual yellow card. If one is given out it will need to be recorded centrally in the EA office.
REMINDER TO ORGANISING COMMITTEES
EVENTING RULE CHANGES IN 2017
Horses wishing to compete in a CIC or CCI 1* must be registered with the FEI. From 2017 horses registering for the first time must obtain a National passport, (at this stage previously registered horses need only renew). The passport costs $80 and takes time to implement as the ID form must be done by a vet and sent back to EA before it is returned to you … don’t leave it until the last minute. EA have an early bird $60 offer if done before close of business on December 22nd. Please follow the link to take advantage:
http://www.equestrian.org.au/news/implementation-ea-national-passport-document
- Juniors wishing to compete 1* or 2* must seek permission from their National Federation, (through their State Eventing Committee).
- The qualifications required for D or uncategorised riders to go up to 1* will be tougher.
- Time penalties for CNC1* & CNC2* will apply for being 20 +
seconds under the optimum time.
