Story

Construction of the East West Link Bridge (pictured) is now complete. This bridge will be used initially by dumptrucks and other construction traffic. It will not open to the public until 2020.

We’re now laying and compacting the rock pavement for the new expressway alongside SH1-Cambridge Road at Tamahere. Click here to see our latest Southern Interchange Update.

Construction of a new intersection in Birchwood Lane is about to begin. This is where the new East West Link Road will provide connections to and from the city, and with the Cherry Lane/Bollard Road community. Click here to see a map.

Building our longest bridge

Construction of the Hamilton’s section’s longest bridge is progressing well. The Mangaonua Gully Bridge is 150m long, and is the only steel bridge on the project.

The photos show the wing wall panels that were precast on the ground, then lifted into place by crane. Wing walls provide support for the road foundations where they tie in with the bridge structure.

Beams heading our way

We’re about to place the bridge beams at two interchange bridges – Greenhill and Ruakura. The beams have been manufactured in Auckland and will be delivered one-at-a-time by a special truck and jinker (rear steering unit), then lifted into place by cranes.

Underpass passes the test

We’ve built a stock underpass near the Greenhill Interchange to allow stock to be moved from one side of the expressway to the other. The photo shows our fencing contractor proving the underpass design is a perfect fit for a farm tractor.

Installing services at Kay Road

Installing a water main under a bridge deck 15 metres off the ground is a challenge. The video below shows how our contractors used a roller system to push and pull a new water main under the Kay Road Bridge, then fix it in place. Mission accomplished!
