Success for abalone in CanadaAfter experiencing frustrating delays in getting market access for farmed abalone to Canada (border was suddenly closed in January 2019 due to a new requirement) the Australian Abalone Growers Association approached the STAG for help in July 2020. We reached out to our Canadian industry network to find the right decision makers in the Canadian Government and through these connections we were able to get a good understanding of what the key issues were – and potentially how they might be resolved. The STAG Secretariat facilitated meetings with exporters, AAGA and the Department of Agriculture and Water (DAWE) to look at the options available and to provide real operational information. This persistence, together with a collaborative and constructive approach by all parties, is the key to achieving success. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency have finally approved the import of Australian frozen, in-shell, farmed abalone for food service and retail uses, as per DAWE advice MAA2020-11 with the below minor addition; When requesting the health certificate, the following details must also be included:
An amended MAA will be issued shortly covering these additions. Congratulations to all the people involved - there were many, including the Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries, Senator the Hon. Duniam. This is a big achievement for industry and illustrates a key role that STAG plays. STAG is a lean agile arrangement driven by exporter need. We come together to solve issues as they arise. It is our combined networks that creates the strength needed to address and resolve often complex international trade and market access issues.
