This newsletter is developed by Council’s Community Development and Social Policy team for the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and is intended for service providers and community organisations that cover the City of Moreland. Council values its partnerships with community organisation and groups now more than ever as community needs grow and change in response to the pandemic.

Working for Victoria

Moreland Council has 309 new jobs through the Working for Victoria initiative.

All jobs offered are six-month contract . Prospective employees will need to sign up to the Working for Victoria recruitment which will be used to match job seekers with their local council. There are a variety of roles available including

  • outdoor land management
  • cleaning services
  • food and meal delivery services
  • digital communication
  • maintenance and improvement to council facilities
  • local business and community advisory 
  • recovery services
  • supervisory and human resources roles.

Support to register for Working for Victoria jobs

Moreland libraries can offer phone-based assistance to residents wishing to apply to the Working for Victoria application portal ‘Sidekicker’. Library staff can:

  • Assist in creating an email account
  • Explain how to create and account and log-on to the Working for Victoria application portal ‘Sidekicker’
  • Explain how to fill-in an online form (what compulsory fields mean)
  • Advise where to find information and advice on looking for work and job application skills (e.g. interview skills)

Library staff cannot:

  • Fill in the form
  • Proof-read an application
  • Give career advice

Booking to get help:

Moreland residents can ring 9353 4000 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) to book a time for a library staff member to call them back.

Information for older people 

Council is still providing home care during this time, including meals, or grocery shopping for our elderly residents. We are taking all the relevant safety precautions to keep our residents and staff safe.

If you you or anyone you know needs support during this time please call our Aged and Community Support team on 9240 2302 to discuss eligibility.

Delivered meals

Moreland Council delivered meals has expanded its capacity.

  • People aged 65 years and over (or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people)  
  • People aged 50 years and over (or 45 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people) who are on a low income, are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Maternal and Child Health

We are continuing to provide Maternal and Child Health to the community in a modified way.

From 18th May we will be doing short 15 minute face to face appointments for all babies 0-8 weeks old.

We have a breastfeeding support line Monday to Friday you can call on 9304 5690 and any general enquiries to our booking line 9240 1111 and press option 2.

Immunisations

Our council run immunisation sessions are still taking place, covering all vaccines on the National Immunisation Program schedule. Appointments must be made to attend. 

All sessions take place at Coburg Town Hall, 90 Bell St, Coburg with plenty of parking on Urquhart St. Please contact 92401111 or sd-immunisation@moreland.vic.gov.au with any queries.

  • Program has been operating continuously during this time.

  • Currently 60% attendance.

Moreland Youth: Support and online programs

Moreland Youth are still here to support young people in the community by continuing to offer information and provide one to one youth support during this time.

Students returning to face- to- face learning 

The Victorian Department of Education has released its return to school plan, with students in Prep – Year 2 and Year 11 and 12 returning to face-to-face learning as early as May 26. The staggered approach will see all students returning to school by June 9.

Merri Health Children and young people phone interviews 

Merri Health are conducting semi-structured telephone interviews with children and young people (of all ages from Kindergarten to High School) in Moreland to understand their needs and experiences in relation to COVID and isolation measures. 

For all interviews with children, a trusted adult will also need to be present.

Food security and volunteers 

The Ecological Justice Hub creates community in its kitchen!

“People are often in quite lonely situations, and a meal cooked with love will do a lot to cheer them up right now.”

The Ecological Justice Hub (EJH) is an initiative of the Jesuit Social services, which seeks to address disadvantage in the community through ecological means. During the COVID-19 pandemic the dedicated, motivated staff and volunteers have been preparing nutritious, delicious vegan dishes straight from the hub’s onsite permaculture garden.

Fawkner Commons

Fawkner Commons is a joint initiative between Fawkner Food Bowls and Fair Share Fare working with local partners to re-purpose the Fawkner Bowling Club into a food distribution hub during the Covid-19 crisis. 

Fawkner Commons offers a safe and contact-less pickup point for locals providing access to The Community Grocer’s staple fruit and vegetable boxes with options to add locally and organically grown produce from Fawkner Food Bowls’ garden

Place your orders Friday-Sunday for pick up on Wednesdays between 10am-12noon at the Fawkner Bowling Club (located at 2 Creedon Street).

St. Vincent De Paul Society, Moreland - Urgently Needs Your Help

St Vincent de Paul are recruiting volunteers to support people in need toi help provide people with local community service information, food or food vouchers, clothing, furniture, budget support, assistance with utility bills or back to school costs. Training will be provided!

Disability information 

A new coronavirus Disability Information Helpline for people with disability  

The Australian Government has created a new Disability Information Helpline for people with a disability. The helpline provides information and referrals for people with disability, families, carers and support workers who need help because of coronavirus (COVID-19). 

You can contact the Helpline in the following ways: 

  • Phone (free call): 1800 643 787 

  • If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, you can also call the National Relay Service on 133 677

Supporting Victorians with disabilities during coronavirus 

On the 6 May, the Victorian Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers, Luke Donnellan, announced a $17 million package to support people with a disability during the coronavirus pandemic.

The funding will be delivered across several different areas of priority. Here is the Media Release from the Minister’s office

Family violence 

Respect each other: “Call it Out”   

The Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, The Hon. Gabrielle Williams, launched a new awareness campaign last week: Respect Each Other: ‘Call It Out’. This campaign encourages all community members to be 'active bystanders' by  

  • Being aware of signs violence might be occurring and  
  • Having knowledge of actions, they can take if they are concerned that someone they know may be affected.

Responding to Family Violence During COVID-19 webinar

Northern Integrated Family Violence Services invites practitioners to watch the Responding to Family Violence During COVID-19 webinar

This 75 minute session will support practitioners to:

  • Identify family violence in the current context
  • Develop strategies to establish safety over the phone
  • Partner with victim survivors to undertake effective safety planning
  • Explore and undertake self-care
  • Stay up to date with changes in the service system.

Books to Your Door

Books to Your Door is a free contactless home delivery service of 10 books each month during library closure. It is offered to Moreland residents who may not be able to access our online library collection and can include children’s, adult and community language books. Arts and Creative Sector  

A central hub of information for the arts sector has been created on the Moreland City Council web page by Arts Moreland.

This covers grants, opportunities, health and well being and general sector resources.

Arts Moreland’s annual arts professional development program has been adjusted to directly respond to support the local sector through COVID-19. Presented in three parts online, the program will focus on survival, adaptation and recovery.
