Simplified Processes Could Advance Fight Against Climate Change

Simpler, more streamlined planning and procedures could go a long way to advancing international efforts to combat climate change, according to a new report from the Global Climate Change Alliance based on a recent consultative event.

 

Some 160 delegates from across the world gathered in Brussels from 18th  – 20th September to extract lessons learned from GCCA-funded projects to date and promote dialogue and exchange between climate change practitioners and negotiators. One word kept coming to the fore.

 

“Simplify, simplify – this came up so many times at this event,” said Roberto Ridolfi Director Sustainable Growth and Development at EuropeAid, in the concluding session of the event.

On the Tanzanian island of Pemba, residents are bolstering their communities against the negative impacts of climate change by investing their time and hard-earned cash in an array of innovative projects, spurred on by the promise of increased household income.

 

What began as a tree-planting project six years ago, has evolved into a highly successful and multi-faceted eco-village development programme. But whether villagers are getting training on building more efficient cooking stoves, learning how to plant fruitful kitchen gardens or exploring the potential of solar energy, all activities are linked to putting extra cash in their pockets.

Budget Support: A Promising Formula for Tackling Climate Change in the Pacific

The Global Climate Change Alliance is piloting using budget support as an aid delivery mechanism. In the Pacific nations of Samoa and Solomon Islands, governments have welcomed their increased ability to manage aid inflow flexibly and in line with national priorities.

 

Climate change finance is expected to rise in the coming years. With around 26% of all GCCA distributions to date provided through sector and general budget support, this leaves significant potential for an increased use of this funding mechanism.
