Upcoming Events Professors of Philosophy David DeGrazia and Jeffrey Brand-Ballard (with Thomas A. Mappes), authored the 7th edition of Biomedical Ethics. Clinical psychology doctoral candidate David Drowos co-authored the article "True memory, false memory, and subjective recollection deficits after focal parietal lobe lesions," in the July issue of Neuropsychology. Masters of the Game: Inside the World's Most Powerful Law Firm, by Kim Eisler, BS '74, is third on the Washington, D.C. Regional Bestseller List. The American Academy of Religion named Acts of Conscience: Christian Nonviolence and Modern American Democracy by Assistant Professor of American Studies Kip Kosek the Best First Book in the History of Religions for 2009. Housing Washington: Two Centuries of Residential Development and Planning in the National Capital Area, edited by Professor of American Studies and director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation Richard Longstreth, was recently published. Ding Ren, MFA '09, was selected as a finalist for the Trawick Prize. Professor Emeritus of Geochemistry Frederic R. Siegel authored The Exploding Population Bomb: Societies Under Stress. The late Lee Sigelman, professor emeritus of political science, and Robert S. Goldfarb, professor emeritus of economics and public policy, co-authored "Does 'Civic Duty' 'Solve' The Rational Choice Voter Turnout Puzzle?" in July's issue of the Journal of Theoretical Politics. Retired Colonel Claude Schonberger, BA '54, received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service during World War II. GW, Smithsonian Expand Partnership
GW students and faculty now have unprecedented access to the world's largest museum complex under a new memorandum of understanding between the University and the Smithsonian Institution. The agreement, signed in July, includes a collaborative program in museum studies, expanded relationships between the Smithsonian and GW's departments of biology, anthropology and American studies, as well as a graduate fellowship for GW students at the Smithsonian."This marks a new chapter in our long association with the Smithsonian Institution to advance learning and discovery," said Columbian College Dean Peg Barratt, who attended the signing ceremony. "From internships for our Museum Studies and Art History students to our collaboration with Smithsonian curators on special exhibits involving the evolution of the primate brain and the biological lineage of dinosaurs, we are proud of the partnerships we have reaffirmed with the Smithsonian." Carl Gudenius, deputy chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance and director of its Production Design Graduate Program, began designing sets and working with stage lighting in 1976. Today, his portfolio spans live theater, broadcast television, exhibit halls and, of course, the classroom."Carl is an enthusiastic professor and a visionary designer, said Dana Tai Soon Burgess, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, MFA '94. "And he has an incredible network that has helped our graduates get jobs in the production design field after graduation. It is a real joy working with him." Read more. Incoming freshmen have a lot to look forward to-a new city, a new roommate, and a new level of academic challenge, to name just a few. With these life-changing experiences, also comes the need for guidance and support as students juggle the rigors of academics with college life. This fall, thanks to funding from the GW Innovation Task Force, Columbian College undergraduates will have access to 18 professional advisors, double the number available in previous years. Advisors will be available to incoming freshmen and returning students to answer questions, offer counsel, and ensure academic goals are met.

Who Is Dean Paul Duff? 
Associate dean of undergraduate studies, professor, researcher, author, and . . . musician? Paul Duff has been with Columbian College since 1991, serving as a professor of religion and, for the past six years, as the College's undergraduate dean. We recently sat down with him to learn more about what he's up to and discuss his scholarly-and musical-interests. Read more.
Advancing Undergraduate Research 
When political science major Sally Nuamah studied abroad in Ghana last year, she taped nearly 40 interviews with girls and women in the West African country. Struck by their articulate and intellectual responses, particularly from the students who attended under-resourced schools, she is now creating a documentary based on the interviews. She will also be returning to Ghana this year to continue her research thanks to a $10,000 fellowship award. Read more.
International Emerging Filmmakers Complete Fellowship 
In early July, the GW Documentary Center wrapped up the 2010 International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship Program. Twenty finalists-10 women and 10 men-were selected to participate out of 251 filmmakers from 56 countries who applied. They spent six weeks in DC, traveling from places like Morocco, Nicaragua, India, and Brazil to take part in this unique international cultural exchange and professional development opportunity. The Documentary Center is part of Columbian College's School of Media and Public Affairs. Read more.
Chinese Statisticians Participate in 10-Week Program 
Visiting Chinese statisticians participating in the Statistics Department's Professional Statistics Development Program were recently welcomed to campus at a reception hosted by Dean Peg Barratt. This is the second year Columbian College has offered this innovative program to members of the Statistical Education Center of the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The center selects up to 30 participants based on experience, merit, and English proficiency to attend the 10-week development program taught by statistics faculty. Since their arrival on our campus in June, the Chinese statisticians have been focused on statistics as well as enhancing statistical communications and leadership training.
Alumni Weekend Festivities Begin Sept. 30 Alumni Weekend is fast approaching! Make plans now to return to GW September 30 through October 3 to reminisce, enjoy the company of old friends, and learn more about what's happening at your alma mater. Special reunion parties will be held for the 1995, 2000, and 2005 classes, but all alumni are encouraged to take part in the festivities. The weekend will include a "Taste of GW" food fair, "Back to Thurston" tours, a guest concert featuring the Barenaked Ladies, breakfast with Columbian College Dean Peg Barratt, and lectures on autism and global security featuring Columbian College faculty. Robb We note with regret the recent passing of Barry Berman, professor and chair of the Department of Physics. With a background in experimental nuclear physics, Berman joined the Columbian College faculty in 1985 and was named a Distinguished Professor in 1998. He worked at the Livermore National Laboratory for more than twenty years, was a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and had more than 400 articles published in scholarly journals. He was also an accomplished musician, extending his love for the arts into his love for science through a popular course he taught on the Physics of Music. Read more. We also mourn the passing of another member of our Columbian College community, James W. Robb, 92, a professor emeritus of Romance languages and an authority on the Mexican essayist Alfonso Reyes. In 1958, Robb became a member of the faculty at GW, where he worked for 38 years before retiring. In addition to teaching language courses in Spanish, French, and Portuguese, he lectured extensively and directed symposia on Ibero-American literature, traveling to countries throughout the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.
