Self-Care With Dr. Kristen KneffWe all need a little self-compassion to get through tough times. Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a close friend. It motivates us to make changes in our lives because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering. This webinar will present theory and research on self-compassion, which is associated with psychological resilience. It will discuss the yin and yang of self-compassion, the fierce and tender energies of care that can be aimed at alleviating suffering. A short practice will be taught to help apply self-compassion when needed in daily life. Living Works START TrainingLiving Works START training is a 90-minute e-module focusing on life-saving suicide prevention skills. While it’s not meant to replace any in-person trainings (such as SafeTALK or ASIST), it is a great option for our current virtual circumstances. At the end of the START program, participants will be able to tune-in to signs that might be about suicide, ask about suicide in a clear, calm and direct way, state that suicide is serious, and connect a person with thoughts of suicide to life-saving help. Everyone Should Carry NaloxoneCOVID-19 had disproportionately impacted people who use substances. Lockdowns and social isolation have presented further challenges for those struggling with substance use and mental health issues with decreased access to supports. Please remind staff and program participants to carry Naloxone. Anyone can carry Naloxone for any reason. Currently, over 30 programs and organizations across the Niagara region are enrolled in the Ontario Naloxone Program. Search the link below to find the closest pharmacy or community organization where you can pick up a free Naloxone kit. No doctor's prescription is required and kits are free. Supporting Parents and Families in NiagaraCOVID-19 has been very difficult on parents. Niagara Parents offers free programs and services to support families. It also hosts monthly Facebook events on a variety of topics such as parenting in a pandemic and mental health. Find Niagara Parents on Facebook or Twitter for relevant resources, events and more.
